Overall Accountability

The Science Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing assistance to students and personnel in science laboratories as directed by the teacher.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Provides professional development and mentorship to teachers and students on the safe preparation and use of experimental materials and supplies

  • Works directly with students and teachers during laboratory activities

  • Ensures a safe working environment in the science areas

  • Develops and integrates a comprehensive management plan to coordinate resources, safety equipment, timelines for ordering and disposal of materials and the safe preparation and storage of materials

  • Maintains the chemical inventory, Safety Data Sheets, chemicals for waste disposal and records of equipment

  • Maintains preparation kits, storage room, emergency materials and the general area for activities

  • Adjusts to new situations and problems in the science areas

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or a related Science

  • Minimum of one (1) year related experience in a laboratory environment

  • Current Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems and Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificates

  • Good working knowledge of computers

  • Ability to deal with laboratory hazards demonstrating expertise and sound judgment

  • Knowledge, training and research skills to identify risks with the introduction of new ideas and materials to the science programs
