Overall Accountability
The Science Laboratory Technician is responsible for providing assistance to students and personnel in science laboratories as directed by the teacher.
Specific Accountabilities
-
Provides professional development and mentorship to teachers and students on the safe preparation and use of experimental materials and supplies
-
Works directly with students and teachers during laboratory activities
-
Ensures a safe working environment in the science areas
-
Develops and integrates a comprehensive management plan to coordinate resources, safety equipment, timelines for ordering and disposal of materials and the safe preparation and storage of materials
-
Maintains the chemical inventory, Safety Data Sheets, chemicals for waste disposal and records of equipment
-
Maintains preparation kits, storage room, emergency materials and the general area for activities
-
Adjusts to new situations and problems in the science areas
Qualifications
-
Post-secondary education in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or a related Science
-
Minimum of one (1) year related experience in a laboratory environment
-
Current Workplace Hazardous Material Information Systems and Transportation of Dangerous Goods certificates
-
Good working knowledge of computers
-
Ability to deal with laboratory hazards demonstrating expertise and sound judgment
-
Knowledge, training and research skills to identify risks with the introduction of new ideas and materials to the science programs
