What You Will Do Our Toronto North (Vaughan) office is seeking early talent to join KPMG’s Tax Incentives Practice as a Software Developer (Co-op) in Fall 2026. This opportunity is for a 4-month or 8-month term. Canada’s Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) program is one of the country’s largest tax incentive programs. It is intended to create a supportive environment for Canadians to carry out research and development (R&D) and foster technological innovation. The program has existed in one form or another for over 50 years. KPMG’s Tax Incentives Practice (TIP) consists of a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and accountants that assist our clients to obtain tax savings through incentive programs like SR&ED.

KPMG is currently seeking a technology-trained student to join its SR&ED Tax Incentives group. The specific opportunity is for an engineering or computer science student.

In this role, you will be focused exclusively on development of internal software and AI tools to assist in our claim preparation processes. This may include net new internal-use software tools and writing automation scripts (e.g. Python, TypeScript/JavaScript) to enhance our claim preparation processes. The role emphasizes applied software engineering, data integration, and responsible use of AI developer tools to support professional judgment in SR&ED claim preparation.

As a TIP Software Developer (Co-op), you will have the opportunity to

  • Interview client personnel to gather pertinent supporting information and articulating compelling arguments to support SR&ED project claims.
  • Examine cutting edge client technologies, products and operations to determine which of their R&D activities qualify for SR&ED incentives.
  • Project Manage Plan, organize and execute multiple engagements on time and within budget.
  • Client Management Successfully develop and manage client relationships/expectations.
  • Keeping up-to-date with innovative technologies and trends in the world of Information Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Data Analytics.

But the main focus of your internship will be on a capstone project for an AI powered internal dashboard to analyze large volumes of diverse client data sets.

Our Intern and Co-op program aims to develop the next generation of leaders through challenging and interesting work. During your term, you will gain authentic engagement experience working with client projects across our teams. Along the way, you will broaden your skill set through KPMG’s vast learning and development opportunities that you can take on to your future career.

The successful candidate will

  • Be exposed to new and exciting technologies and state-of-the art innovations in a wide range of industries (computer science, information technology, FinTech, electrical engineering, etc.) for dozens of companies over the course of your work term.
  • Gain valuable business experience to complement your technical training.
  • Build and manage client relationships at multiple client levels; ranging from software developers to upper management.
  • Promote the advancement of scientific innovation and technology in Canada.

What You Bring To The Role You strive to make a meaningful and positive difference alongside your peers, to work collaboratively and with innovation at the forefront. You’re passionate about being involved in your local community and post-secondary institution and have a proven ability to achieve personal and professional success while being curious as you learn emerging practices and technologies.

  • Post-secondary education in a related engineering or computer science technology discipline is preferred
  • Familiarity with AI‑enabled tools or analytics platforms is considered an asset, along with comfort in leveraging AI to enhance efficiency, generate insights, or support problem‑solving, and a demonstrated interest in how these technologies can be applied in professional settings.

Core Software Engineering Skills

  • Proficiency in Python or TypeScript/JavaScript for backend development and data processing
  • Experience with software design fundamentals (modularization, separation of concerns, reusable components)
  • Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative development workflows (PRs, code reviews)
  • Ability to write maintainable, well‑documented code intended for non‑developer end users

Data Ingestion & Integration Experience

  • Experience working with REST APIs (authentication, pagination, rate limits)
  • Experience ingesting structured and semi‑structured data (JSON, CSV exports)
  • Data normalization and schema design (e.g., mapping issues, epics, comments, commits, timestamps)

Dashboard & Front-End Development Skills

  • Experience building internal dashboards (React, web frameworks, or low‑code platforms)
  • Data visualization skills (filters, drill‑downs, timelines, aggregation views)
  • UX design for professional users
  • Clear explanations of AI‑generated outputs
  • Confidence indicators and traceability back to source data

Product Thinking & Iterative Development

  • Ability to gather feedback from SR&ED professionals and iterate rapidly
  • Translating practitioner pain points into technical features
  • Communicating technical decisions to non‑technical stakeholders
  • Self-starter and solution-oriented mind-set

KPMG Ontario Region Pay Range Information The expected base salary range for this position is $45,000 to $62,000 and may be eligible for bonus awards. The determination of an applicant’s base salary within this range is based on the individual’s location, skills& competencies, and unique qualifications.
