This position is funded through a government program (Canada Summer Jobs), which creates summer job opportunities for youth; therefore, eligible candidates must be:
- Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth must be 15 years of age at the beginning of the employment period. The youth may be more than 30 years of age at the end of the employment period as long as the youth was 30 at the beginning of the employment period.
- Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment. International students are not eligible participants. Youth awaiting a refugee status ruling, as well as those who hold a temporary visitor visa, youth visa or work visa are ineligible.
- Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
The Position
The Summer Life Skills Assistant will support small groups of children and youth with varying abilities.
Community Transitions, Recreation and Life Skills services are designed to restore, remediate and rehabilitate a person's level of functioning. Our goals are to increase independence and life activities, promote health and wellness and reduce barriers to participation. Experience-based life skills activities teach skills using discussion, role playing, problem-solving, peer teaching and experiential learning techniques. Acquired skills are practiced in a simulated and/or real environment where calculated risk is encouraged.
Compensation: $18.00 per hour. Employees will receive an additional 4% in lieu of vacation and paid statutory holidays.
The Summer Life Skills Assistant:
- Works collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members (Therapeutic Recreation Specialists, Life Skills Coaches, Occupational therapists, Assistants/Attendants and other)
- Support all group client participation and learning, as well as provide support to individuals as required.
- Support activities on and offsite, some of the groups are housed offsite in various community locations, including also day outings destinations.
- Complete regular client documentation as outlined
- Other assigned duties
Qualifications
- Current student enrolled in or a recent graduate in college or university program for Developmental Service Work, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology or other allied health disciplines
- Experience working with youth with physical disabilities and/or developmental delays
- Demonstrated understanding and training in supporting individuals with ASD an asset
- Must be willing and able to travel to and from community locations across the GTA
- Comfort travelling by transit
- Must be willing to work occasional evenings and weekends
- Basic CPR certification – Basic Rescuer (C) certificate an asset
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) Certificate an asset
- Demonstrates ability to be flexible, to assess the needs of individuals and to respond quickly to needs
- Demonstrates initiative and self direction to work independently at times
- Demonstrates ability to organize time and manage working hours
- Demonstrates ability to work in collaboration with staff/clients/families and community partners
- Demonstrates sound judgment and excellent communication skills
Weeks of work and required availability:
Applicants must be:
- Available to interview virtually via MS Teams Week of May 18-22, 2026
- Available to attend Hospital orientation June 2-6 TBD including additional training days in June leading up to position start date: June 22nd through to August 28th 2026.
- Available to work 35 hrs/ week and willing to work flexible hours
