Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager of Emergency and Security Services is currently seeking part-time Operational Support Workers. The purpose of this position is to provide perimeter and operational security services within a high security forensic mental health facility. This includes observing/monitoring patient behavior and supporting the patient care process.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Operating a wide range of security and operational equipment ensuring security equipment is in proper working order, and reporting any deficiencies to the Manager or designate.
  • Informing unit staff of any unusual patient behaviour occurring in Provincial Forensic Programs common areas, and/or any visitor-related concerns.
  • Maintaining all key / card control functions for the Waypoint facility and controlling access to and egress from the secure facilities and Forensic Security Office, ensuring that visitors sign-in/out as per established procedures;
  • Screening persons and incoming materials/goods and mail for contraband including ensuring that no weapons enter the building. overseeing and assisting with the movement of goods through the facilities secure perimeter ;screening of contractors and maintaining an accurate tool count
  • Monitoring ,activating and announcing all emergency systems/codes for the Waypoint Campus , and responding to all emergency codes according to established protocols and procedures;
  • Completing patient admissions to and discharges from the facility by performing duties such as: processing of patient valuables, ; ensuring all required documentation is in order prior to a patient leaving the facility, and informing the Manager or designate of any deficiencies;.
  • May provide security support during assigned outdoor patient activities and or hospital outings; including on unit support in extenuating circumstances
  • Security staff must complete all tool counts received from shops, Units dietary, recreation and incoming contractors discrepancies must be immediately reported to the Manager.
  • Providing telephone reception duties, including full switchboard coverage after-hours and as otherwise required consistent with established policies and government standards; operating the Provincial Forensic Programs public address and paging system and Regional site system after-hours for general communications;
  • Will ensure their security memo books, Occurrence reports are accurate and up-to-date at the end of each shift.
  • Arranging for escorts as required through the Team Lead, maintaining communication with all outside escorts involved in patient activities (e.g. yards, recreational activities and medical appointments), advising escorting staff regarding appropriate precautions to be taken for both inside and outside escorts.
  • safe and secure central recreational activities by observing patient and staff activities at recreational activity, intervene where necessary; conducting security checks of patients, materials, and environments such as Yards, Central Recreation areas, Pool, Gym and exercise room; where otherwise consistent with safety and security objectives, engaging with patients in recreational activities and modeling appropriate behaviors; supporting recreation staff in the development and implementation of recreational activities that meet patient needs and abilities while ensuring security of the facility and promoting safety and security ; observe patient behavior and report relevant objective observations to the appropriate manager/designate.
  • Other related duties/responsibilities including performing security searches as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completion of the IAHSS Basic Training preferred and/or Mandatory completion after hire Required
  • Completion of Incident Management Systems 100 through Emergency Management Ontario - Mandatory Required
  • College level Security or Law Enforcement Diploma Preferred
  • Province of Ontario Security License Mandatory Required
  • Valid G Class Ontario Driver License Mandatory Required
  • Additional specialized security training and certification in healthcare/mental health care setting Preferred
  • 2 years of recent Hospital Security experience Preferred
  • Safety and security principles and practices in order to develop specialty security knowledge and skills for a highly secure forensic facility commonly obtained through relevant education.
  • Basic security equipment (e.g. metal detector, wands, x-ray, monitors, portable radios, PA systems) in order to apply the technology as per policy and practices;
  • Relevant legislation such as the Mental Health Act, the Criminal Code of Canada, Freedom of Information, the Personal Health Information Protection and Privacy Act, Health Care Consent Act, and the Occupational Health & Safety Act etc. Knowledge of hospital codes and interventions related to this position.
  • Computer software and keyboarding skills to input/report in an electronic database, create documents and utilize e-earning, e-mail, inter/intranet.
  • Verbal and written communication skills in order to respond to inquiries and interactions with patients and colleagues, and members of the public and family members, as well as to relay and document basic information as per policies and procedures, and to give basic direction as appropriate.
  • Interpersonal and customer service skills in order to develop and maintain effective relationships with patients, peers, other team members, family members, and members of the public, and to maintain emotional control and refrain from taking negative actions when provoked or faced with opposition or hostility from others, or when under stress.
  • Analytical skills to determine one’s own action in his/her role while maintaining static, dynamic and relational securities, and, consistent with relevant legislation and hospital policies and procedures. Staff will determine the appropriate information to provide in response to inquiries, as well as judgment in applying hospital policies and procedures, taking alternative action when appropriate and reporting same.
  • Physical skills to perform the physical demands of assigned tasks such as lifting, carrying a maximum of 50 pounds, pushing and pulling heavy carts , responding to emergency codes, restraining or assisting in a physical restraint, and defending oneself or assisting others in defending against violent assault.
  • The completion of Use of Force Reports, Occurrence Reports and Memo book writing is a requirement relative to the interactions of a security staff.
  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values, and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude
  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language
