We are seeking casual, on-call supervisors to oversee the safe and appropriate use of the Music Building at SMUS’ Senior School campus Choir, Band, and Strings rooms during evening practice hours. The Supervisor ensures that boarding students have access to a supportive, structured, and productive environment in which to practice and collaborate. This position supports both the Music Department (SMUS Choir, Band, Strings programs) and the SMUS Boarding community, and as such, the supervisor may also be required to liaise with SMUS Houseparents and the Director of Boarding and Student Life.
Days & Hours of Work:
Sunday through Wednesday; 6:45 PM to 9:45 PM
The successful candidates will have the following skills, background and interests:
Qualifications:
- Minimum High School Diploma required.
- Music experience such as working towards a degree in Music, Music Education, or related field would be an asset.
- Experience working with youth in an educational environment is an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to maintain appropriate professional boundaries.
- Reliable, responsible, and approachable, with the ability to work independently.
- Enthusiastic and supportive of students’ musical growth.
- Organized, with the ability to oversee multiple students using different spaces at the same time.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and address issues calmly and effectively.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Key Responsibilities & Expectations:
- Maintains a consistent supervisory presence in the Music Building during scheduled evening hours.
- Ensures safe, respectful, and appropriate use of music facilities, instruments, and practice rooms.
- Supervises boarding students practicing individually or in small groups.
- Monitors space and communicates with users regarding which rooms are available, and when space needs to be shared.
- Facilitates a positive and productive practice environment by monitoring and addressing student needs.
- Provides access to practice rooms and assists with basic student inquiries.
- Identifies and reports facility or instrument maintenance issues to the Head of Music.
- Communicates promptly and effectively with the Head of Music regarding student, or facility concerns.
- Supports the department in fostering student engagement, responsibility, and musical growth outside of class hours.
- At the end of each shift, ensure that rooms are tidy and reset, with sound and music equipment returned.
- Other duties as required.
Pay Range:
Hourly pay range: $21.97 - $25.84
Criminal Record Check:
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
