Overall Accountability

The Educational Sign Language Interpreter facilities communication between the student, administration, teacher, hearing peers and staff as directed by the teacher, the Consultant, Instructional Services, Deaf & Hard of Hearing, the Educational Audiologist and supervised by the Principal. The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is a member of the student’s Learning Team.

Specific Accountabilities

  • Performs interpreting for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students, facilitating communication while ensuring integrity and impartiality in the process, in accordance with performance standards, policies, practices and regulations specific to Calgary Catholic

  • Provides support to Deaf and Hard of Hearing student and to the educational team to create a positive learning environment.

  • Provides interpretation that makes the sources message precise and accurate in support of a quality learning environment, meeting linguistic needs, cultural dynamics and the core and substance of the conversation.

  • Facilitates communication, ensures integrity and impartially in the process in accordance with Calgary Catholic policies, practices, and administrative procedures.

  • Respects stakeholder’s privacy and holds in confidence all information pertaining to Calgary Catholic matters

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary Diploma in an American Sign Language or Signed English Interpreter Training program from a recognized institution.
  • Active membership in the Association of Visual Language Interpreters of Canada and/or the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, USA.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • Ability to establish trust and rapport with students and staff
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Familiarity and understanding of deaf culture
