Seasonal Lot Grading Inspector (Engineering Technologist I)

The City of Edmonton is looking for dedicated individuals to join our Development Services team for the upcoming construction season. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the orderly growth of our city by ensuring new developments manage surface drainage effectively.
As a Seasonal Lot Grading Inspector, you will perform a high volume of inspections for new buildings, primarily focusing on residential and low-complexity sites. Your work ensures that as-constructed grades align with approved plans and the City’s Drainage Bylaw to protect property and the community.
What will you do?
- Verify lot grading work by conducting site inspections of residential, multi-unit, commercial, and industrial developments
- Assess foundation and swale grading, window well heights, and the location of downspouts
- Evaluate the impact of landscaping features, such as retaining walls, on adjacent properties
- Investigate surface drainage complaints using digital levels and mobile technology
- Review lot grading certificates and plans for compliance with regulations and special conditions like restrictive covenants
- Complete detailed inspection reports and correspond with property owners or contractors regarding deficiencies and solutions
- Maintain accurate records and manage assigned files within the POSSE database system
Qualifications:
- 2-year diploma in a Civil Engineering Technologist program
- 2 years of experience directly related to drainage, including engineering surveying, landscaping, surface runoff, and civil construction
- Experience resolving issues directly with contractors, developers, and the public
Assets:
- Membership or eligibility for recognition as a Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) with ASET
Skills required for success:
- Professional application of Civil Engineering principles, surveying, grading, and slopes
- Deep understanding of lot grading guidelines and the Drainage Bylaw
- Strong verbal and written communication for responding to inquiries and drafting reports
- Conflict resolution when addressing drainage complaints or failed inspections
- Proficiency in technical terminology and techniques related to drainage
- Operation of precision equipment and instruments
- Interpretation of complex plans, specifications, diagrams, and charts
- Effective engagement with community partners, contractors, and engineers

Conditions of Employment:
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
- Successful candidates are able to be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- CRC - Hire is dependent on a Criminal Records Check (CRC) that is satisfactory to the City of Edmonton, and there may be a cost associated with this requirement
- CLASS 5 & OWN VEHICLE - Candidates are required to hold a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) or higher. Candidates will be required to arrange their own transportation and, where appropriate, will be reimbursed in accordance with City of Edmonton policy. This may require the candidate to obtain business-use auto insurance

Work Environment:
- Note: This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52
- The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement, and the incumbent will be notified in advance
- This role works in both indoor and outdoor settings
- This role works primarily in an outdoor setting. Shifts may be cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather
- Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, and vibrations may occur
- This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, and crouching requiring physical stamina and resilience
- This is a public-facing role and requires engagement and interaction with diverse people from various backgrounds with different needs, expectations and emotional states
