Compensation Range

Job Summary
The Field Experience Manager provides strategic leadership in the coordination and implementation of field experiences for teacher candidates/interns within the Okanagan School of Education (OSE). This position manages the Field Advisor and Field Observer (FA/FO) team, providing clear direction, mentorship, and accountability structures to ensure effective support for teacher candidates. As a key liaison between UBC and school/community partners, the Manager plays a critical role in translating the OSE’s academic vision into impactful field-based learning experiences that align with the B.Ed. program’s INSPIRE framework.

Organizational Status
This position reports directly to the Director of Undergraduate Programs and Director of the Okanagan School of Education, works closely with the program assistant and communication manager, manager of administration and operations, admissions officers, academic advisors, and Faculty members who teach within the OSE Bachelor of Education program. As well, this position is responsible for the coordination and supervision of the team of Field Advisors and Field Observers.

Work Performed

Management of FA/FO Team:

  • Provides direct supervision and performance management of Field Advisors and Field Observers, including regular check-ins, feedback, professional development planning, and conflict resolution as needed.
  • Leads hiring, onboarding, and training for new Field Advisors and Observers, ensuring they are oriented to OSE's field education philosophy and practices.
  • Establishes performance expectations and accountability measures for FA/FOs, including consistent documentation, adherence to observation protocols, and student support procedures.
  • Chairs regular team meetings with the FA/FO group to align on priorities, share observations, and coordinate student progress interventions.
  • Develops and implements FA/FO evaluation mechanisms, using student feedback, observation quality, and collaboration metrics to improve field advising quality.
  • Provides mentorship and supports professional development pathways for the FA/FO team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and reflective practice.
  • Facilitates and contributes to the development of a collaborative, inclusive, inquiry-oriented professional learning culture with the FA team, OSE Undergraduate program faculty and staff, partner schools/school districts, and other community partners.
  • Oversees student preparation and progress in field experiences (with support of the FA team), plans student Advisory session agendas and presenters; tracks student absences; liaises with mentor teachers, school administration, FAs, and the Director of Undergraduate Programs regarding any concerns with a BEd student’s progress during field experiences; manages process for supporting students of concern (for academic or other reasons), including scheduling of meetings with the student, completing paperwork for Notices of Concern, Professional Assessment Reports, Program Withdrawals, Program Reinstatement, etc., as well as follow-up correspondence, ensuring due process for teacher candidates and interns; establishes and maintains key collaborative partnerships with campus resources and initiatives that support at-risk student success, including the Disability Resource Centre, Equity and Inclusion Office, Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Office, Early Alert, Ombuds Office etc.

Field Experience Team Leadership

  • Acts as the primary escalation point for complex issues arising in the field (e.g., student performance concerns, school placement breakdowns, mentor-FA alignment).
  • Coordinates the overall FA/FO deployment model to maximize coverage and consistency across multiple districts and cohorts.
  • Maintains a field experience calendar and FA/FO staffing matrix to optimize placement visits and ensure timely reporting.
  • Builds a collaborative culture among FA/FOs, promoting shared norms, peer support, and cross-case consultation practices.

Programmatic Leadership:

  • Advises the Director on the strategic deployment and resource needs of the FA/FO team, ensuring appropriate caseload distribution across districts and schools.
  • Develops tools and practices to enhance data-informed decision-making related to student placements, interventions, and FA/FO engagement (e.g., FA workload tracking, student concern analytics, etc.).
  • Leads internal reviews and process improvements of the field education model, consulting with school partners and campus stakeholders to strengthen equity, consistency, and impact.
  • Facilitates the field experience team efforts regarding program planning in relation to the development and coordination of field experiences, including orientation and induction activities, mentor teacher recruitment and follow-up, and partnership development.
  • Oversees development and updating of field experience materials (e.g. Field Guide, evaluation forms, surveys, course outline templates, calendar). .
  • Consults and collaborates with teacher candidates, interns, mentor teachers, school district personnel and community agencies regarding field experiences to clarify policies and expectations.
  • Liaises (in coordination with the Directors) with key stakeholders including: local school districts, government agencies and the Ministry of Education, the private sector individually and through employer asociations, to foster relationships between the OSE and the external community, seeking advice, perspective, and support.
  • Collaborates with school/district partners to develop professional learning initiatives that support teacher candidates and interns.
  • Advises the Direcotr of Undergraduate Programs on key considerations that impact the Bed program priorities and any long term planning related to teacher candidate and intern success.
  • Provides input to the Directors, to develop and implement organizational strategies, initiatives and policies that promote wellness and academic success for teacher candidates and interns.
  • Contributes to BEd program reviews and ongoing monitoring and reporting (e.g., BCTC Maintenance Review and Structured Dialogue, Undergraduate Program Committee and OSE unit reports).

Field Experience

  • Leads an Advisory cohort of candidates and interns.
  • Conducts visits to school placement hosts and conducts observations and feedback sessions with teacher candidates.
  • Oversees student progress and provides student advising regarding progression and performance in field experiences.
  • Consults with curricular leaders and instructors to assess and monitor the progress of teacher candidates throughout the program.
  • When required, participates in appeal processes initiated by teacher candidates or interns.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of the Okanagan School of Education.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position must be willing to give negative feedback to the teacher candidate if required. Inappropriate judgment or unwillingness to provide constructive feedback can harm the teacher candidate’s progress in the program and/or result in difficulties in subsequent practice settings. Errors in judgement could seriously impair the reputation of OSE as well as the reputation of UBC with the school district.

Supervision Received
Works under the direct supervision of the Director of Undergraduate Programs, with input from the other Directors within the Okanagan School of Education. All decisions and work conducted by this position is subject to review, approval and supervision by the leadership team within the Okanagan School of Education.

Supervision Given
Provides formal leadership, supervision, and operational oversight to a team of Field Advisors and Field Observers. Responsibilities include setting performance standards, conducting evaluations, resolving operational and personnel issues, and ensuring the team delivers high-quality, student-centered support during field experiences.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of four to five years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Willingness to respect diverse perspectives, including perspectives in conflict with one’s own

  • Demonstrates a commitment to enhancing one’s own awareness, knowledge, and skills related to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in education.
  • Prior experience in the field of education, preferably in leadership positions at the school, district and/or university-level in British Columbia.
  • Experience with and knowledge of current pedagogical research and best practices in teaching is considered an asset.
  • Proven team management skills with ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to lead change by taking appropriate action to ensure acceptance and support.
  • Ability to listen effectively, interact respectfully, and act transparently.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify key information and issues and act accordingly.
  • Availability to work flexible/extended hours as needed.
  • Ability to exercise tact and discretion is critical.
  • Note: Off-campus work will take place within clusters of schools in the follow schools districts: SD 83- North Okanagan/Shuswap, SD 22: Vernon, SD 23: Central Okanagan, and SD 67- Okanagan/Skaha.
