Physician Lead - Clinical Experience - Faculty of Medicine
About the role
The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) invites applications for the position of Physician Lead, Clinical Experiences. Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and working in close collaboration with the Senior Advisor of Medical Education, Faculty leadership, clinical partners, and program administrators, the Physician Lead provides academic leadership for the planning and coordination of clinical learning experiences within the undergraduate medical education (UGME) program. The Physician Lead supports the implementation and development of high-quality clinical education, including early clinical experiences, community-based learning, clerkship rotations, and other supervised clinical training opportunities, ensuring alignment with program objectives, accreditation standards, and national medical education frameworks.
This role ensures consistency, quality, and continuous improvement of clinical learning environments across Prince Edward Island. The Physician Lead contributes to the development of supportive and inclusive clinical training settings and helps ensure that clinical education reflects the Faculty of Medicine’s mission, strategic priorities, and commitment to socially accountable medical education responsive to the health needs of Prince Edward Island.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide academic leadership for the development and implementation of clinical learning experiences within the undergraduate medical education (UGME) program, including early clinical exposure, community-based learning, and clerkship training
- Contribute to the development of the Faculty of Medicine’s clinical education model, including policies, processes, and structures supporting high-quality clinical training
- Support the preparation of accreditation documentation and processes required to obtain and maintain accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS), particularly related to clinical education and the clinical learning environment
- Assist in the design, organization, and documentation of clinical curriculum components as part of institutional and program accreditation preparation
- Work with healthcare partners and clinical educators to support the development and coordination of clinical training opportunities across Prince Edward Island
- Support the recruitment, engagement, and coordination of clinical faculty and preceptors involved in undergraduate medical education
- Develop approaches to address learner feedback related to clinical teaching and the clinical learning environment and support continuous quality improvement of clinical education
- Promote clinical learning environments that reflect professionalism, respect, inclusivity, and psychological safety
- Contribute to the strategic planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement of the MD program
- Participate in the establishment and ongoing renewal of the UGME mission, goals, and strategic priorities, aligned with the Faculty of Medicine and University strategic plans
- Contribute to the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and governance structures that support high academic and pedagogical standards
- Plan for the monitoring of program quality, tracking learner outcomes, and implementation of continuous quality improvement initiatives
- Promote and support scholarship and research in undergraduate medical education
- Represent the Faculty of Medicine in provincial and national UGME forums
- Undertake other duties as assigned by the Dean or their delegates
Liaison & Collaboration
- The Physician Lead collaborates broadly across the University, healthcare partners, and community organizations to advance socially accountable medical education and strengthen community-engaged partnerships
Committee Responsibilities
- Participates in Faculty of Medicine and University governance structures and other committees as appropriate to the portfolio and as determined by the Dean of Medicine
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A medical degree with certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), or equivalent
- Member in good standing of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI
- Membership in the Medical Society of Prince Edward Island (MSPEI)
- Appointees must maintain an active appointment to the medical staff of Health PEI (HPEI)
- Demonstrated leadership experience in medical education, health systems, community engagement, or related fields. Preference will be given to demonstrated experience and/or training in medical education, leadership, and quality improvement
- Demonstrated experience in clinical teaching and supervision of medical students or other health professional learners
- Experience coordinating or supporting clinical training experiences such as clerkship rotations, early clinical exposure, or community-based learning
- Familiarity with competency-based medical education frameworks, including CanMEDS roles and Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs)
- Experience working collaboratively with clinical faculty, healthcare teams, and partner organizations to support high-quality clinical education
