We support work-life balance, promote physical and psychological safety, and offer competitive wages, pensions, and benefits. Together we make Calgary a great place to make a living, a great place to make a life.

The City is committed to fostering a respectful, inclusive and equitable workplace which is representative of the community we serve. We welcome those who have demonstrated a commitment to upholding the values of equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism and reconciliation. Applications are encouraged from members of groups that are historically disadvantaged and underrepresented. Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request.

As the Senior Architect, Facilities and Places, you will be accountable for determining whether proposed facilities can be safely, legally, and effectively realized on a given site, within regulatory and policy frameworks, and in alignment with operational and service delivery needs. You will define and validate project intent, functional and spatial requirements, massing and layout concepts, site suitability, regulatory and permitting pathways, and high-level cost and schedule assumptions. Primary duties include:

  • Lead early project definition, feasibility, and due diligence activities, including confirming project intent, scope, site suitability, and high-level cost and schedule assumptions prior to advancement to design or procurement.
  • Develop and validate project proformas, functional programs, spatial requirements, and high-level architectural and site concepts to confirm project viability.
  • Identify architectural, site, regulatory, operational, partnership, and delivery risks at the earliest stages of the project lifecycle; conduct structured risk assessments and recommend mitigation strategies.
  • Prepare clear, evidence-based recommendations and decision-ready materials for senior leadership and governance bodies.
  • Collaborate with private-sector and non-profit developers to advance mixed-use and joint-use projects that integrate civic, commercial, residential, and community-serving uses.
  • Evaluate development proposals and partnership opportunities for feasibility, public value, risk, and alignment with corporate, service, and city-building objectives.
  • Facilitate early engagement with internal and external interest holders, aligning diverse requirements into a coherent, feasible project scope.
  • Ensure early-stage architectural work aligns with corporate standards, policies, legislation, and best practices, and identify viable regulatory, planning, and permitting pathways.
  • Champion high-quality architectural outcomes, urban design, and place-making while balancing public value, operational integrity, cost, schedule, and long-term lifecycle considerations.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Architecture and at least 8 years of progressively responsible experience as a Registered Architect.
  • Must be a Registered Architect with the Alberta Association of Architects (AAA), in good standing, by the first day of work.
  • Experience must include civic, institutional, mixed-use, and multi-family projects.
  • Experience in early project development, including feasibility studies, functional programming, site and building assessments, and validation of scope, cost, schedule, and regulatory assumptions will also be essential for this role.
  • Working knowledge of architectural best practices, Alberta Building codes, and City of Calgary permitting processes and requirements is required.
  • Working knowledge of multifamily housing financing opportunities and constraints would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and political acumen are essential in this role, along with the ability to build strong relationships with clients, consultants, and colleagues.
  • The successful candidate will have strong analytical thinking and judgment, along with the ability to provide technical or professional advice to a variety of audiences.

Pre-employment Requirements

  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
