Mission
As the Director of Care, you will contribute to Extendicare’s purpose of Helping People Live Better by leading a high-performing team dedicated to ensuring residents receive the care they need.
The Director of Care (DOC) is a skilled and compassionate leader who oversees the delivery of exceptional, resident-centered care in a long-term care home. The DOC manages all aspects of care operations, ensuring best practices aligned with Extendicare standards, accreditation requirements, and provincial regulations.
Leading and inspiring an engaged team is essential to achieving an excellent resident experience. Building strong, trust-based relationships with residents and families is also key to satisfaction and fulfilling our mission to provide care wherever people call home.
Key Outcomes
- Advocate for resident safety and continuous quality improvement
- Achieve high resident and family engagement through Experience Survey results
- Meet or exceed quality and clinical indicators through effective program execution
- Foster a positive culture and improve employee engagement year over year
- Ensure full compliance with regulatory requirements, care plans, and organizational policies
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
- Cultivate: Provide day-to-day leadership, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and high-performing team environment
- Train: Ensure staff receive required training and support ongoing professional development
Operations & Financial Management
- Financial Stewardship: Manage staffing in line with the Extendicare care model and legislated hours; support budgeting and variance analysis
Compliance & Risk Management
- Comply: Ensure adherence to healthcare regulations, licensing standards, and employment legislation
- Risk Management: Identify and address resident care issues, mitigate risks, and respond promptly to critical incidents
Resident & Family Experience
- Customer Service: Respond to feedback with empathy and professionalism
- Resident Care: Oversee assessments and individualized care planning based on resident needs and preferences
Collaboration & Improvement
- Collaborate: Work closely with leadership, staff, residents, and families to optimize care delivery
- Improve: Lead quality improvement initiatives focused on safety, wellness, and satisfaction
- Strategic Planning: Develop operational plans aligned with home-level clinical priorities
Community & Values
- Community Partnership: Engage vendors and community health partners to enhance care and training
- Values Alignment: Promote the organization’s Mission, Vision, and Values with integrity and ethical leadership
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (Master’s preferred)
- Current, unrestricted RN registration with the applicable provincial body
- Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, including 2+ years in a leadership role (LTC or healthcare setting)
- Strong knowledge of long-term care regulations and best practices
- Proven leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams
- Experience driving quality improvement initiatives and achieving positive outcomes
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (EHR) and related technology

Compensation Details
$110,000.00 - $140,000.00
