As Legal Counsel – Acquisitions and Divestments (A&D), you will play a key role in supporting Canadian Natural’s strategic growth initiatives. This position offers the opportunity to lead the review, drafting, and negotiation of complex purchase and sale agreements within a dynamic, fast‑paced environment. Leveraging strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills, you will work both independently and collaboratively to manage competing priorities and meet critical deadlines. The successful candidate is detail‑oriented, adaptable, and committed to delivering high‑quality legal support while thriving in an evolving, team‑focused setting.
-**Job location:**Calgary, Alberta -**Shift schedule:**5 x 2, 8-hour shifts -**Safety sensitive position:**No -Application deadline: April 5, 2026
Key Accountabilities:
- Lead the drafting, review, and negotiation of complex purchase and sale agreements, translating commercial terms from Letters of Intent into clear, enforceable legal documentation using established Canadian Natural precedents
- Drive the resolution of sophisticated legal and commercial issues—working closely with external counsel and counterparties on matters including title, environmental considerations, rights of first refusal, financial terms, and operational risks to successfully close transactions
- Serve as a trusted legal advisor on acquisitions and divestments by maintaining a strong, current understanding of applicable regulations, contractual frameworks, representations, warranties, and industry best practices
- Oversee comprehensive due diligence activities, including detailed title reviews for acquisitions and dispositions, and manage title remediation efforts on Canadian Natural lands as required
- Coordinate and manage all closing activities, including preparation and review of ancillary documentation, rights of first refusal notices, and fulfillment of contractual closing conditions, while ensuring seamless communication across internal stakeholders
- Support post‑closing activities by facilitating the distribution of executed documents, addressing post‑closing matters, and partnering with the A&D team to ensure successful transaction outcomes
What You Bring to the Role:
- Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree, with eligibility or active membership in the Law Society of Alberta
- 8 plus years of progressive experience supporting Canadian oil and gas acquisitions and divestments, with demonstrated involvement in complex, high‑value transactions
- Background in commercial or corporate A&D transactions, with real estate experience considered a strong asset
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word and spreadsheet applications, with the ability to efficiently manage and analyze transaction‑related documentation and data
- Experience working with QBLM or a comparable land management database is preferred, enabling effective navigation of land, title, and ownership information
