About the role

Job Overview
The Township of Langley is currently recruiting for a temporary full-time Trades 1 – Trees (from approximately December 8, 2025 – December 3, 2027) to join our team of professionals in the Public Works Division, Parks Operations Department. Reporting to the Manager, Parks Operations, in this unionized position you will perform semi-skilled arboricultural and/or horticultural work involving tree planting, watering, pruning and maintenance. This position may assist in overseeing the work of contractors ensuring compliance with municipal regulations and established safe work practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform tree related maintenance tasks including pruning, removals, pest control, watering, and planting
  • Respond to service requests from the public
  • Assign, supervise and check the work of others performing routine tasks and provide training, as required
  • Operate a Class 5 dump truck (Ford F550 or similar) with chipping machine in a safe and courteous manner.
  • Complete and maintain a variety of records, forms and maps
  • Perform related work as required

Qualifications

  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by courses in Arboriculture and/or Horticulture plus sound related experience, including some supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Certified Tree Risk Assessor Qualification is desirable.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods, practices, materials, tools and equipment used in arboricultural and related to the work
  • Sound knowledge of the names and varieties of a wide variety of trees, plants, shrubs and flowers, their characteristics and requirements and the application of an integrated pest management program
  • Ability to provide routine information to the public and provide follow-up to their complaints and enquiries
  • Ability to assign, supervise and check the work of one or more staff and provide training to same

This position is defined by the Township of Langley as a position of trust (Child Safety). The successful candidate(s) will be required to have a Police Information Check as a condition of employment (not required as part of the application process, however, will be required upon consideration for employment).

Required Certifications/Licenses
Candidates must have the following valid and current certifications/licenses (must be valid at the time the posting closes) and these must be attached with your application.

  • BC Class 5 (full privilege) Driver’s License. You must include with your application a current Personal Driving Record (select the 5-year option if obtaining online) that has been obtained within 6 months of the closing date. To obtain a copy of your Personal Driving Record, please contact ICBC directly or the driving authority where you reside. Please note that a copy of your Driver’s License and the Driver Factor Report will not be accepted.
  • Certification as an Arborist with the International Society of Arborists
  • Pesticide Applicators License – Landscape General
