We are investigating a range of new technologies to produce devices that can more efficiently detect the deep UV scintillation light of liquid Argon and Xenon. The student will contribute to the research programme using current measurement setups that use cryogenic and vacuum systems to mimic the conditions in noble liquid detectors, and to the development of new test infrastructure. Responsibilities: Measuring the optical and electronic properties of semiconductor single-photon detectors Operation and maintenance of cryogenic vacuum systems for device characterization, and contributing to the design of a new measurement apparatus Developing electronics and mounting hardware for new devices Developing measurement control and data analysis software Skills: Interest and experience with optoelectronic devices and/or single photon detectors (asset, not required) Experience with cryogenics and vacuum systems (asset, not required) Experience with electronics hardware (asset, not required) Learning Outcomes: An understanding of the operation of single-photon detectors and their applications to particle physics experiments Experience in characterization techniques for optoelectronic devices Experience working with cryogenics and vacuum Skills required: Analog Electronics, Electronic Instrumentation TRIUMF, Canada's national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, is situated on the vibrant south campus of the University of British Columbia, nestled within the beautiful Pacific Spirit Park in Vancouver, BC.
