About the role

JOB SUMMARY The Buyer is responsible for sourcing, negotiating, and purchasing materials, equipment, and services that support Ensign's drilling, well-servicing, and project operations. This role ensures cost-effective procurement, supplier performance, inventory availability, and compliance with company standards while supporting field operations across a dynamic oil and gas environment. This position is based in Nisku, Alberta, and may require travel and occasional on-call support. INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS The Buyer works in collaboration with Rig Managers, Field Superintendents, Yard Managers, Project Managers, and Operations, Engineering, Finance, and Maintenance teams to support procurement activities and operational requirements. EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS The Buyer regularly collaborates with vendors, service providers, subcontractors, equipment manufacturers, and repair facilities to support procurement activities and operational requirements. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES Source and purchase materials, equipment, and services for drilling, maintenance, and projects. Coordinate purchases and deliveries to meet quality, cost, and schedule requirements. Build supplier relationships and monitor vendor performance. Negotiate pricing, contracts, and commercial terms. Manage purchase orders, resolve supplier issues, and ensure policy compliance. Monitor market conditions, supplier opportunities, and industry requirements. Identify cost-saving opportunities and share recommendations with stakeholders. Provide updates on deliveries, substitutions, and procurement performance metrics. TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel and Word. Experience with ERP systems; Microsoft D365 is preferred. Ability to review technical specifications and industrial equipment requirements. Understanding of procurement processes and commercial terms, including Incoterms. BEHAVIORAL COMPETENCIES Strong negotiation, communication, organizational, and time-management skills. Self-motivated with strong accountability, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Minimum 5 years of procurement, purchasing, or supply chain experience, preferably within oil and gas operations. SCM designation or professional procurement certification (CIPP, SPSM, CPIM, CPM, or equivalent) is considered an asset. Experience reviewing contracts, supplier agreements, and technical requirements. Knowledge of drilling operations, well servicing, oilfield equipment, and industry standards is preferred. Fluent English is required QUALIFICATIONS Strong understanding of supply chain and procurement best practices. Knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements within the oil and gas industry. Basic accounting and e-commerce knowledge. Mechanical aptitude and familiarity with oilfield equipment are assets. Demonstrated ability to provide directions to suppliers and support staff. OTHER ACCOUNTABILITIES Business Ethics – Understands fully Ensign’s ethics policy and its application in all business dealings including contractual agreements and contract negotiations. Drug-free workplace - Conforms to a drug-free workplace, not be under the influence of mind-altering prescription or non-prescription drugs, including alcohol and any other prohibited substance. Occupational Health and Safety – Understands fully the Ensign Health and Safety policy and self-responsibility for own health and safety at work; Demonstrates responsibility to avoid adversely affecting the health and safety of others through any act or omission. Uses the correct PPE as provided by Ensign and guards against misuse or damage to such equipment. Reports any hazardous situations arising in the workplace that cannot be self-corrected. Reports any injury incurred during the course of work, no matter how minor. Avoids injury resulting from manual tasks, by use of risk assessment, correct mechanical handling equipment and correct manual handling techniques
