Nature & Scope
The Health and Safety Specialist supports the Health and Safety Manager in promoting a strong safety culture and ensuring compliance with WorkSafeBC regulations. This role involves developing and implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and enforcing preventative measures to minimize hazards. Key responsibilities include guiding the Joint Health and Safety Committee, providing training and orientations, investigating incidents, and maintaining emergency preparedness plans. The Specialist also monitors regulatory compliance, oversees contractors, and fosters inclusion and awareness across the organization through proactive communication and reporting.
Major Responsibilities**-** in this position, you will**:**
- Develop and provide, as required, safety training, orientations, and educational programs for all employees, as appropriate to their competencies, and recommend additional training when needed
- Develop and implement occupational health and safety (OHS) policies, programs, and procedures in compliance with WorkSafeBC standards.
- Conduct risk assessments and job hazard analyses to identify potential hazards and implement strategies to reduce risks.
- Deliver or coordinate safety training, orientations, and educational programs for employees; recommend additional training as needed.
- Lead investigations of incidents and ensure compliance with WorkSafeBC and client requirements.
- Develop and maintain emergency response plans, including first-aid, fire safety, and evacuation procedures.
- Stay current with safety regulations and ensure organizational compliance with all applicable standards.
- Compile, analyze, and report safety performance data to management; recommend improvements based on findings.
- Foster a strong safety culture by promoting awareness and commitment to safety across all levels of the organization.
- Guide and support the Joint Health and Safety Committee in meeting its objectives.
- Ensure subcontractors and third-party vendors adhere to company safety standards and protocols.
Qualification**-you bring:**
- Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent education.
- Minimum 2 years of related experience in occupational health and safety.
- In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and compliance standards (WorkSafeBC preferred).
- Experience in building and delivering safety training programs.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with internal teams and external service providers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel), Adobe, Teams, and SharePoint.
- Valid OFA Level 1 or 2 certification considered an asset.
- WHMIS certification required.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.
- Professional demeanor and ability to foster positive relationships across all levels of the organization.
- Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
- Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
