**The Position:**GIS Technician

**Type:**Full-time

**Reports To:**GIS Coordinator

This role may be based in multiple locations; however, only one position will be filled.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collect, manage, and analyze spatial data from diverse sources - including vector, LiDAR, satellite imagery, field surveys, aerial photography, and existing geospatial databases - to support forestry operations and timber development.
  • Digitize and georeference paper maps and legacy spatial data to modern standards.
  • Produce high‑quality cartographic products with professional symbology, labeling, legends, and layout design within our organization’s standards.
  • Tailor map products and datasets for various internal and external audiences (e.g., stakeholders, field staff, regulatory groups).
  • Perform data editing, cleaning, transformation, and quality checks to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance with organizational standards.
  • Work with and maintain data, maps, and apps hosted on ArcGIS Online.
  • Support field data collection workflows using Field Maps, Survey123, and related mobile tools.
  • Develop or assist with automation workflows using Python, ModelBuilder, or other tools to improve efficiency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Expectations

  • Post‑secondary degree or diploma in Geographic Information Systems.

  • Experience in forestry GIS applications, gained through academic or work settings.

  • Strong proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS technologies, including ArcGIS Pro, spatial datasets, geoprocessing tools, and essential GIS concepts.

  • Demonstrated experience working with the following is highly considered:

    • Experience producing customized map series or automated map products derived from large or complex datasets.
    • LiDAR point‑cloud analysis and derived products (e.g., DEM/DSM generation, canopy metrics).
    • Multispectral or stereo imagery for interpretation or analysis.
    • ArcGIS Enterprise, including feature services, data management, and web maps/apps.
    • ArcGIS Online deployment and management of Field Maps and Survey123, including form design, offline maps, and field workflows.
    • Aerial data collection with drones. Flight plans, processing / managing drone‑derived datasets such as orthomosaics and point clouds.
  • Experience with Python scripting, automation, or ModelBuilder; SQL or Arcade experience is considered an asset.

  • Familiarity with QGIS, Avenza or Phoenix Connect is considered an asset.

  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 products (Excel, Word, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive) in a cloud‑based environment.

  • Commitment to safety and compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations.

  • Ability to maintain a high level of technical proficiency and adapt to evolving GIS technologies.
