The MH/QHC Patient Care Technicians are the laboratory professionals that interact directly with patients. They collect samples such as blood from adults, children and neonates. They are also responsible for performing ECGs as required in the outpatient and inpatient setting.

They work under the CUPE collective agreement and maintain respectful relations with representatives, direct supervisor and employer.

Responsibilities:

  • Primary source of contact between the laboratory, patients, and other health care professionals, in all inpatient and outpatient collection areas.
  • Collect samples such as blood (via venipuncture, finger prick or heel prick) from adults, children and neonates and receive other samples from patients.
  • Perform ECGs as required in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Laisse with CDS.
  • Perform daily ECG, phlebotomy cart and other maintenance as required.
  • Manage inventory as required.
  • Miscellaneous duties as required.
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and follow hospital safety procedures. This includes wearing necessary protective equipment, reporting problems with equipment and hazards, and having a medical follow-up at the request of Occupational Health Services.
  • Must have the physical strength, flexibility, and endurance required to perform the job, as analyzed by the physical needs assessment for the position conducted by Occupational Health Services.
  • Practices according to, and is knowledgeable in, the Laboratory Quality Management System.
  • Participate and show competence in written annual competency, specimen collection audits.
  • Maintain respectful relations as a CUPE member with representatives and employer working under CUPE collective agreement contract.

Qualifications:

  • Laboratory Assistant Certification required.
  • MLPAO registration required.
  • CSMLS an asset.
  • 1-3 years recent acute care experience performing high volume phlebotomy and ECGs
  • Knowledge of laboratory LIS (Laboratory Information Systems)
  • Good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skill.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the position: Walking for long time across the hospital, pushing the phlebotomy & ECG cart, etc.
  • Required to maintain patient privacy and confidentiality.
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required.
  • Able to learn and use Technology for work & communication: MS Office, Rover, Pager, EMR (EPIC), etc.
  • Good Troubleshooting skills
