POSITION DESCRIPTION:
JUNIOR SCHOOL VICE-PRINCIPAL, STUDENT LIFE/TEACHER (CONTINUING, FULL-TIME; 0.8 FTE Administrative; 0.2 FTE Teaching Assignment). This position commences on August 17, 2026.
POSITION OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Junior School Principal, the Junior School Vice-Principal, Student Life, provides leadership for the K-7 Student Life program while advancing the K-12 student life continuum across the school. The JS VP, Student Life, implements the K-7 vision for student life through identified strategies and tactics from the Southridge Strategic Plan, leading collaboratively with the Junior School Core and Extended Leadership Teams, and the K-12 Leadership Team for Learning and Students.
Leadership
- Contribute to and co-lead the strategic development and implementation of K-7 Student Life programming within the K-12 vision for Student Life
- Collaborate with the Junior School Principal to nurture an environment and school climate where students feel safe, connected, and cared for
- Collaborate and consult with the Junior School Core and Extended Leadership Teams to ensure continuity across K-7 Learning and Student Life initiatives
- Collaborate with the SS Vice-Principal, Student Life and the K-12 Leadership Team for Learning and Students on the development, implementation, and review of K-12 student life activities and initiatives
- Co-plan and facilitate strategically aligned JS Faculty meetings and professional development opportunities with the JS Principal and Vice-Principal, Learning
- Lead and collaborate with Junior School colleagues who support Student Life, including the JS Athletics Director, JS Student Life Liaisons, and JS Counsellors
- Sit on school committees related to Student Life, including:
- Risk Management
- Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT)
- Ensure policies related to Student Life are consistently implemented
- Support Human Resources procedures in the Junior School, including hiring and faculty induction
- Take on the role of Acting Principal, as needed, when the JS Principal is in meetings or off campus.
Program Development and Logistical Coordination
- Know and support the implementation of the IB Standards and Practices (2020), particularly those relating to student life
- Coordinate student life programming, including:
- the Junior School Outdoor Education program
- K-7 participation in House program initiatives and events
- the Grade 7 Ambassador program
- the MYP service program
- K-7 co-curricular programming, scheduling, and faculty assignments
- weekly assemblies
- special events (e.g. Terry Fox Run, feasts, celebrations, Gr. 7 Finale)
- K-7 age-appropriate service and leadership skill development opportunities
- student safety and behaviour
- Conduct reviews of student life programs to ensure their efficacy
- Develop and implement Student Life programming that reflects and celebrates students' diverse identities and experiences
- Coordinate teacher-on-call coverage in collaboration with the JS Principal's Administrative Assistant and the Vice-Principal, Learning
Community
- 0.2 Teaching Assignment, as determined by the Junior School Principal
- Guide and nurture student behaviour that aligns with Southridge values and expectations, including the Junior School Promise
- Implement proactive and restorative practices that nurture student behaviour that aligns with the Junior School Promise, essential agreements, and school guidelines and policies
- Build authentic partnerships with parents as partners
- Liaise with outside organizations that support student health (e.g. immunization clinics, lice checks, special guests, student workshops, etc.)
- Attend and participate in core school functions and special events
- Other duties as assigned by the Junior School Principal
Desired Qualifications and Experiences
- Bachelor's degree in education (Elementary/K-7)
- Experience at the middle leadership level and/or participation in leadership development opportunities (e.g. ISABC Team Leader Program, CAIS Leadership Foundations, CAIS Leadership Diploma, Masters-level degree in leadership or similar)
- Valid BC teaching certificate
- Legally entitled to work in Canada
- Minimum 5 years of K-7 teaching experience in an IB World School
- Knowledge of current child and adolescent social and emotional development and restorative/positive behavioral interventions
- Highly collegial team partner who is committed to collaborative decision making and continuous professional growth
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with children and adults
- Proficiency with the Google
- First Aid Certification (or willingness to obtain certification)
