Context:

This role involves performing and overseeing a broad range of engineering design and documentation tasks, managing project scope and compliance, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and serving as the engineer of record for assigned work.

Missions/Main Duties:

  • Perform a wide range of engineering design tasks on assigned projects under general supervision of the lead or manager. Tasks include engineering drawings, engineering reports, presentations, and applications to regulatory or funding agencies.
  • Develop designs through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats. Prepare and revise documentation throughout engineering phases including site plans, utility plan and profiles, grading plans, cross sections, submittal reviews and response to information requests.
  • Assist in developing and managing the project scope, including cost estimates, budget, staffing and schedule.
  • Assist in preparing conceptual, preliminary and final designs and attend client meetings regarding project requirement.
  • Prepare sections of engineering project proposals, change orders, and manage client communications pertaining to specific projects.
  • Coordinate technical activities and design efforts with personnel in other disciplines and departments
  • Prepare engineering feasibility studies by analyzing engineering design, conducting environmental impact assessments, and collecting necessary data.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, provincial, and local legal requirements by reviewing current and pending legislation, enforcing adherence to regulations, and advising management on necessary actions.
  • Verify adherence to construction specifications throughout all project phases. Monitor project progress, inspect construction sites, and verify calculations and materials placements.
  • Service as the engineer of record on own work and that of junior staff members.

Profile/Skills:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (specialization in structures considered an asset).
Supplemental training in structural modules (design, maintenance, construction/repair, inspection, evaluation) from MTQ (Ministère des Transports du Québec), preferred.

Years of experience: Minimum of 10 years of relevant engineering experience, including at least 5 years specializing in structural design (bridges, railways, highways, etc.).

Technical competencies:

  • Registered member in good standing of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec (OIQ).
  • Demonstrated experience in detailed design.
  • Experience in the railway industry is a requirement.
  • Familiarity with North American railway standards and best practices (AREMA, CROR, AAR).
  • Advanced skills in AutoCAD and structural design applications.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., SAFI).
  • Competency with project management and productivity software (MS Project, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, both in French and in English*
