Role Summary The Surgical Data Analyst is responsible for assessing, analyzing, maintaining, and reporting Surgical Program data, including those that are submitted to Cancer Care Ontario and other regulatory bodies. The role supports collaboration between internal and external stakeholders in Surgical wait time reporting, data integrity, and performance analytics.
Key Accountabilities
- Surgical Data Quality Management & Reporting
- Oversee data integrity for Surgical Wait Time and other surgical data sets (i.e. OR Schedule Data, etc.); partnering with other relevant stakeholders in the process.
- Resolve daily data issues and Message Failure Management (MFM) errors for the Wait Time Information System (WTIS).
- Maintain accurate WTIS procedure maps and ensure ongoing compliance with provincial standards.
- Validate and correct discrepancies between WTIS, Epic, and Ontario Health systems.
- Collaborate with surgical offices to verify wait‑time accuracy and manage case cancellations or DART additions as required.
- Complete weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc program reporting; including Surgical Site Infection data and SETP metrics (among other things).
- Strategic Surgical Data Quality Improvement
- Support quality‑improvement initiatives focused on enhancing data integrity and operational performance (e.g., management of OR block utilization data base, data cleansing, spend analytics, etc.).
- Work with internal and external partners on system testing and changes that impact WTIS or SETP (and data bases) data collection in Epic.
- Support and facilitate system or process updates related to surgical data reporting.
- Provide training and timely support to stakeholders, ensuring consistent understanding of data requirements.
- Build effective working relationships with clinical, administrative, and surgical teams to strengthen data completeness.
- Work with Decision Support and other departments to validate data and support performance reporting.
- Analytical & Technical Expertise
- Respond to ad‑hoc data/analytics requests; gather/extract, cleanse, and analyze data using Excel or other analytical tools to support the surgical program’s goals.
- Identify trends, summarize insights, identify opportunities for improvements, create options and recommendations, and prepare reports for internal and external audiences
Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in Health Informatics or Business (preferred).
- High level proficiency with Microsoft Office, especially advanced Excel functions for data analysis/manipulation/modeling.
- Experience with WTIS, SETP, and knowledge of surgical workflows is an asset.
- Knowledge of surgical information systems and hospital electronic systems (e.g., Epic OpTime, Meditech) is an asset
- 3–5 years of experience in healthcare or CCO reporting.
- Strong communication, organizational skills, and attention to detail.
- Highly collaborative and consistently demonstrate a team-based approach; able to create partnerships with stakeholders to support practice adoption
- Demonstrated initiative, curiosity, and commitment to continuous improvement.
