Rainy River Mine Situated in beautiful northwestern Ontario, 65 km northwest of Fort Frances, the Rainy River Mine is an open pit and underground, gold and silver producing, residential mine site.

The Rainy River Mine, located adjacent to the Ontario / Minnesota border is 65 Kilometers northwest of Fort Frances, Ontario and is situated half way between Winnipeg, Manitoba and Thunder Bay, Ontario The area is home to more than 130 species of birds and large populations of moose, black bear and deer. About The Role Schedule: 14 days on, 14 days off - 12 hour days

Position Reports To: Senior Tailings Dam Engineer

Position Overview Reporting to the Senior Tailings Dam Engineer, the Tailings Dam Engineer in Training (EIT) will be responsible for ensuring the Rainy River Mine is operating above industry best practices, while being a subject matter expert on all regulatory requirements that relates to tailings dams. The incumbent will strive for continuous improvement leading with the New Gold values of innovation, collaboration, accountability, respect, and excellence.

The Tailings Dam EIT works from the site Administration Building, in a shared office space, with office and field assignments as directed by the Senior Tailings Dam Engineer. The primary responsibilities of the Tailings Dam EIT are to ensure that all field survey and construction activities are conducted safely, to ensure that construction activities are executed in compliance with the relevant engineering standards, issued for construction drawings, and technical specifications, and to support New Gold Construction in detailed project planning and successful execution of construction works.

The successful candidate must demonstrate commitment to and compliance with all company and industry Health & Safety, Environmental, and Social Responsibility policies and is responsible for engaging their work with the Courage to Care; never compromising on safety, looking out for one another, and stopping work if it is not safe.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Follow Site Safety Policies & Procedures
  • Maintain review compliance to all relevant Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and other site safety policies and procedures on a minimum annual basis or as policies and procedures are revised.
  • Perform work in compliance to all relevant policies and procedures and ensure that all mining regulations and company safety standards are met or exceeded in all aspects of work performed by self and others.
  • Conduct Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for non-routine tasks and ensure that all work performed is supported by a formal assessment of risks and hazards which has been reviewed and signed off by the workers.
  • Complete Job Observations, safety audits and inspections, and Safety Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to evaluate work practices and intervene and correct non-compliant working behaviours or conditions.
  • Provide daily and weekly task direction, prioritization, guidance to the Tailings Dam Technician(s) ensuring that their job duties are being performed safely, effectively, and aligned with priorities.
  • Support the training and development of Tailings Dam Technician(s) by sharing knowledge, skills, and best practices to help them perform their duties safely and effectively.
  • Provide technical instruction and guidance on all dam monitoring practices and procedures.
  • When needed, carry out instrumentation measurements and tailings elevation surveys according to the schedule defined by the Tailings Dam Engineer (TDE)
  • Review instrumentation data reports prepared by Dam Technicians and notify TDE of any issues.
  • Support deployment and installation of instruments at the tailings and water management facilities in the mine and establish remote communications
  • Conduct periodic maintenance and inspections to diagnose existing or potential issues on instrumentation equipment for safe and proper operation
  • Support emergency repairs promptly and efficiently
  • Implement and manage the instrumentation database together with EoR and GIS team
  • Perform weekly and or monthly dam inspections, notify the TDE of any abnormal or unusual conditions. Plan short term to mid-term tailings deposition.
  • Support site investigation (test pitting and drilling) projects by working with consultants and contractors
  • Manage the Action Logs for various activities such as Dam Safety Inspections, ITRB meetings and others
  • Asist annual update of OMS manual
  • Participate and support TDE in Dam Safety Inspections (DSI), Dam Safety Reviews (DSR), and ITRB meetings.
  • Monitor and assess pore water pressure responses of Instruments to support EoR.
  • Review EOR’s instrumentation reports and address deficiencies in accordance with their recommendations, in consultation with TDE.
  • Inform the TDE of any issues observed or identified by others concerning the dam monitoring program, including potential dam safety concerns, data inconsistencies, or equipment malfunctions.
  • Be familiar with requirements of OMS Manual and support TDE in tracking OMS activities to ensure the OMS requirements are met.
  • Support TDE in directing day-to-day tailings deposition activities.
  • Support TDE in preparing and conducting monthly TMS presentations.
  • Support TDE in preparing and conducting ERP preparedness training to construction crews.
  • Mentor and provide guidance for the Tailings Dam Technicians
  • Work closely with New Gold Capital Projects, Environmental, and Mill teams, as well as external consultants and contractors
  • Potential to perform other tasks as part of the role in the Dam Monitoring team

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering with geotechnical specialization, or related field.
  • Minimum 3-5+ years of industry experience, in design, construction, operation, and surveillance of mine tailings dams and water management facilities.
  • Experience on geotechnical projects considered an asset including lab and/or field testing, site investigation, and construction QA/QC
  • Experience with MS Office, MUK3Dconsidered an asset
  • Experience with installing, monitoring, and troubleshooting geotechnical instruments including VWPs, SIs, MEs and SPs
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Team player with good organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently in various environments when required
  • Registered, or ability to register, as an Engineer in Training (EIT) with Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO)
  • Valid Canadian Driver’s License with clean driving abstract.

Working Conditions

  • Split time between office and field (driving and walking)
  • Occasional moderate lifting is required (50 lbs)
  • Team environment, with regularly scheduled and ad hoc meetings
