We are pleased to offer an exciting growth opportunity for a Junior Acid Plant Specialist to join our skilled Materials Technology Group. Our team of expert materials engineers based in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada is dedicated to enhancing the reliability of critical equipment by implementing proven materials practices at key stages of design, procurement, and operation. We also leverage the expertise of our XPS partners in process control, extractive metallurgy, and process mineralogy to complement our skills and deliver comprehensive support.
Responsibilities & Accountabilities
The primary functions of the Junior Acid Plant Specialist are:
On-site inspection and evaluation of in-service plant equipment, including confined space entry
Provide guidance on design, construction, and optimization of acid plants
Advise on the operation of key equipment like converters, heat exchangers, and acid towers, and equipment in the gas cleaning section.
QA/QC on new equipment during fabrication or existing equipment repairs
Assist in repair designs of plant equipment in areas of welding, masonry, coating, non-metals
Support laboratory testing of materials for corrosion, wear and structural applications
Support laboratory RCFA projects
A commitment to safety and sustainability
Provide and develop specialized knowledge and expertise for our clients
Manage project phases, timelines and budgets to ensure successful project delivery
Contribute to business performance through the identification of new opportunities or expansion of existing engagements.
Education/Experience/Skills
The ideal candidate will possess:
A Bachelor or Graduate degree with specialization in materials or metallurgical engineering
Minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience working in an operating sulfuric acid plant or a minimum of 50% of time spent consulting for and inspecting sulfuric acid plants on site. Preference is for work or consulting in a maintenance focused role.
Licensed or eligible to apply for P.Eng.
Understanding and exposure to base metals flowsheets
Ability to travel domestically and internationally (approx. 30% per calendar year)
Ability to work inside confined spaces and wear applicable personal protective equipment
Project management skills and the ability to thrive in a dynamic team
Ability to manage time-pressure projects and deliverables.
Open to occasionally working outside of normal business hours to meet client needs (emergency and international work in different time zones).
An acute business sense and entrepreneurial spirit
Excellent problem solving, time management and analytical skills with keen attention to detail
Proficiency of MS Office Suite
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written). Fluency in English, as well as ability to write proficiently about complex scientific or technical topics.
