The job supports the teacher in the delivery of Cree language program for students at St. Joseph Catholic High School. The job works under the direction of the teacher in the classroom and partners with the teacher and principal to plan, organize, coordinate, and instruct subjects in the Cree language. The job has responsibility for delivery of the curriculum as prescribed in the Alberta Guide to Education.
The work requires the incumbent to be fluent, both written and spoken in both English and Cree languages.
Responsibilities
- Assist teacher in development, implementation and modification of instructional plans
- Work with teacher to develop lesson plans and homework assignments
- Work with the assistant principal and language consultant to develop strategies to enhance instruction and to create learning centres to focus young students
- Under the direction of the teacher develop and implement instructional plans and activities in the classroom
- Create and plan effective curriculum-based projects
- Consult with the teacher in determining assignments, projects, programs and activities within the curriculum
- Incorporate language games, formal language exercises and literature into classroom instruction
- Modify instructional material considering age and development level of students
- Prepare instructional materials for programs, projects, and activities
- Provide classroom instruction to support the teacher in delivering the curriculum
- Manage and supervise the class by monitoring student activities and behaviours during brief absences of the teacher
- Demonstrate techniques to students to complete lessons, assignments, projects or activities
- Focus on students requiring additional help or motivation to complete lessons
- Tutor and work with students to improve study skills, memorization and overall learning
- Monitor and complete summary to assess student’s progress
- Communicate findings to teacher with suggestions for improvements in instruction
- Identify students who are behind or struggling and advise teacher
- Under the direction of the teacher develop methods and opportunities to focus on individual studens.
Qualifications
- Degree or diploma in child development, education or Native Studies(preferred), plus five years of related instructional experience
- Fluency in English and Cree, both written and oral is essential
- Knowledge of Alberta Education system in general and Language programming in particular Knowledge of traditional FNMI realities, the FNMI culture
- Knowledge of Mircrosoft programs including Excel,Outlook and databases
- Knowledge of program planning, presentation and instruction
- Understanding of elementary curriculum, language and cultural programs
- General knowledge of the Division’s and school’s programs, operations, policies and procedures
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work in partnership with the teacher and learning coach to plan and implement instructional activities
- Strong research skills are required to maintain technical knowledge and enhance delivery of language program
