About the role

Alberta Newsprint Company (ANC), a joint venture of Stern Partners and West Fraser Timber Company Ltd., is a leading manufacturer of premium paper products. Located in Whitecourt, and operating with a non-unionized workforce, the firm's paper mill - the first in Alberta - produces paper of such high quality that it has become the standard by which other paper products manufactured in Canada are measured. The company is a successful, well-financed, progressive organization that is regarded as one of the best companies in the paper industry.

ANC Timber Ltd., a division of ANC, is looking to hire a Woodlands Summer Student for the 2026 field season. ANC is located in Whitecourt, Alberta, just 2 hours drive from Edmonton. This position would have a tentative start date of early May 2026 and an end date of late August 2026.

Description of the Woodlands Summer Student role:

  • Ensure compliance with ANC's safety and environmental standards
  • Conducting survival and regeneration surveys
  • Participating in growth and yield measurements
  • Planting and seeding quality checks
  • Stand tending and vegetation management monitoring, assessments, and quality checks
  • Conducting block and road layout as well as creek assessments
  • Other tasks, as identified

The candidate must:

  • Be enrolled in a post-secondary Forestry or Natural Resources Management program, and/or forestry work experience
  • Have a valid Class 5 Driver's License
  • Be physically fit and able to spend considerable time working in a forested environment
  • Enjoy working outdoors in a variety of weather and terrain conditions
  • Have experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and GPS technology
  • Be able to work independently

The Woodlands Summer Student position at ANC will expose you to a wide range of activities, from block planning to harvesting to reforestation and regeneration performance measurements. You will learn from a small group of experienced forest professionals who were once where you are now.
