Shepherd Village is currently accepting applications from qualified candidates for the position of Recreation Assistant (Part-Time). The Recreation Assistant (Part-Time) will support the department while working in a retirement setting.
What You Will Work On
Reporting to the Recreation Supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for assessing, planning, facilitating, and evaluating recreation programs that meet the resident’s recreational needs, interests, and expectations. The incumbent will complete comprehensive resident recreation assessments, computerized documentation and other records, as required. This role will support residents’ requests and needs to allow them to maintain a level of independence and to participate in activities of their choice. You will support family, volunteer, student, and community involvement.
How You’ll Create Impact
- Performing all duties of the Recreation Assistant role efficiently while fostering positive relationships with residents, families, staff, and other parties.
- Planning, facilitating, and evaluating a variety of activities that address the social, emotional, intellectual, spiritual, and physical needs of residents.
- Developing monthly activity calendars and posters. Distributing calendars to each resident and posting them on designated display boards.
- Completing comprehensive recreation assessments, maintaining accurate records and reports, and ensuring all documentation is accordance to the Ontario Long Term Care Standards, Shepherd Village Mission & philosophy of care, accreditation standards and departmental policies and procedures.
- Coordinating equipment and supplies, managing calendars, assisting with room set-up/take-down, and contributing to policy/procedure development and improvement.
- Leading and supporting volunteers and students, communicating effectively with all parties, and proactively identifying and addressing issues or needs.
- Implementing Montessori activities for residents who have dementia and require extra support.
- Supporting Resident Council.
What Are Your Skills and Experience
- Degree or Diploma in Recreation, Therapeutic recreation, or other related field from a community college or university/
- Minimum Two (2) years’ experience working in a Seniors Recreation setting.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English language.
- Demonstrated experience in designing, planning, executing and evaluating recreational activities and therapeutic programs for Seniors.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Capacity to initiate new, creative and innovative programming ideas, work independently, or in a cooperative team environment.
- Competency in documentation practices and computer applications (i.e. MS Word, Excel, Activity Pro, Point Click Care, MDS).
- Positive attitude, compassionate and energetic personality to represent Shepherd Village professionally and positively.
- Personal Support Worker (PSW) certificate considered an asset.
- Availability to work evenings and weekend hours.
- MUST be qualified to work in Canada legally for the employer.
