Advisor, Responsible Innovation & Data Ethics
About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Information and Privacy, the Advisor, Privacy – Responsible Innovation & Data Ethics serves as Covenant Health’s primary operational leader for privacy by design in emerging technologies, data innovation, advanced analytics, and AI. The Advisor establishes and drives the organization’s privacy compliance approach for these domains—owning the privacy risk management framework, associated processes, toolsets, and operating mode – under the Health Information Act (HIA) and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA). The Advisor will also conduct and oversee the full privacy impact assessment (PIA) lifecycle for qualifying initiatives; define standards and procedures that enable the responsible adoption of innovative technologies; embed privacy controls into enterprise data governance and implement a practical AI privacy governance program aligned with recognized frameworks such as NIST AI RMF and ISO/IEC 42001. They collaborate closely with various partners to ensure solutions meet Covenant Health’s policies and Alberta legislative requirements, while escalating significant risks and recommendations to the Manager. The ideal candidate will leverage their risk management, governance, reporting and continuous improvement experience to own the privacy impact assessment lifecycle and develop ongoing improvement initiatives. Required Qualifications:
Completion of Baccalaureate degree in Information Management, Health Informatics, Law/Legal Studies, Public Administration, Computer Science, or related field. Minimum of five years in privacy/data protection with hands‑on privacy experience. Demonstrated experience with hands on PIA development. Experience leading privacy work for advanced analytics, data platforms or AI solutions. Artificial Intelligence Governance Professional (AIGP) or Certified Information Privacy Technologist (CIPT) designated or willingness to obtain certification upon hire. Equivalencies in education and experience may be considered.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Ability to translate privacy legislation and regulatory guidance into practical, scalable controls for complex technical environments. Demonstrated understanding of AI, machine learning and advanced analytics to assess privacy and ethical risk. Demonstrated lead-without-authority experience, including facilitation of cross-functional working groups and coaching peers/champions. Demonstrated discretion with confidential issues.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with NIST AI RMF and awareness of ISO/IEC 42001; experience translating these into practical governance for AI or advanced analytics. Knowledge of POPA (formerly known as FOIP) and privacy program obligations. Strong communication, facilitation, and change‑enablement skills; ability to work cross‑functionally and with vendors. Experience in health care or regulated environments.
