Hôpital Glengarry Memorial Hospital (HGMH) is a patient-centred primary care hospital that has been established in Alexandria, Ontario for 60 years. HGMH provides acute care, 24-hour emergency services, outpatient services and rehabilitation to over 41,000 residents every year. Our team includes over 180 staff members, 50 Medical Staff members and 100 volunteers who all take pride in bringing quality health care to our local Eastern Ontario community.

POSITION PURPOSE

An unregulated health care provider who provides clinical care to patients and their families. They will work in collaboration with an interdisciplinary healthcare team under the supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional. To participate in this program, Clinical Externs must engage in a learning plan and regular documentation of learning.

This position allows for self-scheduling.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Currently enrolled in: -Nursing students: Any year of study in a College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) approved Baccalaureate Nursing (BScN or BN) program and Practical Nursing (PN) program having completed one clinical placement or Internationally Trained Nurse (in any year of study in a CNO approved program) have received a CNO letter of direction and meet one of the following:
    • are in any year of study in a CNO approved program, such as a BScN-IEN program, PN-IEN program,
    • OR are completing a micro-credential plan with a curriculum to meet the CNO requirements for registration (e.g., Standards of Practice for nursing, Entry-to-Practice Competencies, Evidence of Safe Practice, Evidence of English Language Proficiency), or have completed their educational requirements (e.g., BScN-IEN/PN-IEN program or micro-credentialing) and are waiting to write their registration exam; -Paramedicine studentswho have completed the first year of a paramedic program; enrolled and transitioning to second year; -Physiotherapy studentsPhysiotherapy students in any year of study of a training program accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). -Occupational therapy studentsin any year of study in a training program accredited by the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) having completed one clinical placement. OR have completed a minimum of two semesters of a physiotherapy program; -Respiratory therapy studentscurrently enrolled in the second or third year of a respiratory therapy program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Respiratory Therapy Education, which is administered by the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists;
  • Basic knowledge of performing vital signs, sterility and aseptic technique and established Infection Control and Occupational Health and Safety practices;
  • Successful completion of a recent clinical placement in an acute clinical area
  • Current BLS;
  • Knowledge of body mechanics, and safe patient lift and transfer practices;
  • Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team;
  • Effective communication skills to provide ongoing support and care for diverse patients and communicate any concerns, changes in the patient¿s condition;
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills;
  • Commitment to maintain dignity and self-esteem of patients and families in delivery of care;
  • Proficient computer/technological skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure, request assistance when required, and to adapt to change rapidly.
  • Proof of two first COVID vaccinations.
  • Bilingualism, an asset.
