Position Summary

The Cafeteria and Café Supervisor works in collaboration with the Nutrition Services Department and reports to the Manager of Nutrition Services. This role is responsible for the organisation and supervision of the day-to-day cafeteria and café functions, oversight of the Food Service Assistants and Café Volunteers and ensure that established policies and procedures are adhered to.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Plans, organizes and supervises the activities of the Cafeteria and Café to ensure that an efficient and continuous service is developed and maintained.
  2. Supervise, schedule, and ensure all training is complete for cafeteria staff and in many cases, oversee volunteers, ensuring they understand their responsibilities and safety protocols.
  3. Manage daily operations, including food preparation, portioning, and service in both the cafeteria and the volunteer café.
  4. Review supplies, orders and equipment, maintaining records of stock and food waste. Complete weekly order forms for Volunteer café ensuring they are sent to the Nutrition Diet Office for processing.
  5. Ensure food safety, sanitation and hygiene regulations are being followed.
  6. Review Cafeteria menus quarterly, with Food Production Assistants and Nutrition Manager. Make changes where needed to assist with budget controls. Review monthly variance report with Manager of Nutrition Services.
  7. Manage POS Systems, review pricing quarterly, and resolve customer complaints.
  8. Maintain records of Food Handler Certification ensuring all staff are compliant.
  9. Participate in monthly meeting with Cafeteria staff, keeping staff updated on new information and changes in the cafeteria. Keep a communication book for volunteers for them to review and stay up to date on changes in their area.
  10. Promotes and maintains harmonious and effective working relationships with employees, volunteers, department managers and other daily contacts.
  11. Review policies and procedures for the cafeteria and café with the Nutrition Manager updating and making changes where needed. Establish and maintain work routines for Cafeteria and Volunteer Café.
  12. Ensure food and temperature audits are completed as required.
  13. Ensures unsafe conditions discovered personally, or identified by others, are investigated immediately and corrected and reported to the proper authority.

Essential Qualifications

  • College diploma in a recognized program in nutrition services or equivalent combination of education and work experience
  • Current member of CSNM or eligible to receive certification
  • Valid Food Handler Certificate and ability to maintain certification
  • Minimum three (3) years current experience in a leadership capacity in a unionized environment
  • Minimum of five (5) years recent food service experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IPAC, Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations and WHMIS
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all relevant regulations governing food service operations
  • Demonstrated ability to promote effective working relationships and work collaboratively with all team members
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be proficient in computer software applications including managing POS systems
  • Demonstrate computer literacy in a Windows environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electronic scheduling system is an asset (e.g. UKG)
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, coaching and motivational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively and co-operatively with all levels of staff, patients and the public
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal, communication and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment with continually changing priorities
  • Demonstrates RMH Strategic Directions: Compassionate Care, Clinical Excellence, Timely and Available Services, and Population Health
  • Demonstrated positive work record, good attendance record
  • Must be able to fulfill the physical requirements of the jobs, as per the current Physical Demands Analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • One to three years of recent experience in an administrative capacity

Hours of Work

Hours of work for this position are 37.5 hours/week, Monday to Friday. Flexibility of hours of work is required and is based on department needs.
