Medical Director, Informatics
About the role
CONTRACT SUMMARY
As the AMA Medical Director, Informatics you will work closely with the AMA Informatics professionals, Informatics Advisory Committee, AMA Board, and provincial leaders to ensure the voice of AMA members is heard as provincial strategy is developed and rolled out in the form of key projects such as referral and lab closed loop ordering.
Experience and interest in informatics, including but not limited to Connect Care and/or community EMRs is required.
The successful candidate will also sit on the AMA Informatics Advisory Committee which is directly accountable to the Board of Directors. The committee assists the Board of Directors by:
- Representing members and providing advocacy efforts in the form of feedback, implications and advice on provincial informatics initiatives.
- Presenting informatics issues to the AMA Board of Directors for awareness, advice and direction.
- Coordinating representation across informatics priorities and working to ensure a unified AMA voice is provided to external stakeholders.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Medical Doctor (MD)
- The successful applicant must be a practicing physician in Alberta and be a member in good standing with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta.
- The individual must acknowledge that they are a member of the AMA in good standing and will remain a member in good standing throughout the term of the contract.
Experience:
- Understanding of the new provincial health system structure in Alberta and the relationship between ministries, agencies and corridors, and community physicians – including differences between specialties.
- Awareness and understanding of ongoing provincial priorities; and matters involving integration between primary and acute care and other segments of the continuum of care.
- Current clinical experience with digital health tools, workflows and infrastructure.
- Experience in improving the efficiency of clinical operations, including optimizing workflows, reducing redundancies, and maintaining quality care.
- Working knowledge of Canadian players in digital health and work in other jurisdictions.
- Familiarity and interest in the history of the evolution of digital health in Canada and Alberta.
Skills:
- Relationship building: Ability to foster and maintain relationships at all levels.
- Leadership: Leading and representing physicians in a collaborative manner at governance tables.
- Advocacy: Comfortable and effective in advocacy role – AMA doesn’t own the digital health projects, nor do they provide direct leadership with funding to lead the charge.
- Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams, including physicians, administrators, and operational leaders.
- Clinical Knowledge: Extensive clinical practice knowledge to understand physician challenges and translate those into effective workforce solutions.
- Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey complex information to various audiences, including physicians, executives, board members, and external partners.
KEY ACTIVITIES
In collaboration with the AMA Informatics Committee and AMA Informatics professionals:
- Provide feedback and advice on priorities, strategy and implications related to provincial informatics initiatives.
- Prioritize strategies as required and subsequently develop recommendation(s) for a course of action or range of options to submit to the Board for consideration/approval.
- Respond to emerging or priority issues that may arise from requests from the AMA board or members.
- Present issues to the AMA BOD for discussion and advice.
- Represent AMA members’ priorities and requirements on working groups, projects and provincial informatics initiatives.
- Develop and evolve relationships and advocacy at an overarching level.
- Work with other jurisdictions and agencies.
- Collaborate with other AMA Medical Directors (those being created to parallel the 4 agencies) to define scope and approach for the new AMA and provincial structure.
KEY DELIVERABLES
The Medical Director will work collaboratively with other professionals within the AMA and be an integrated part of the AMA team. The Medical Director will be responsible for substantive leadership and contributions to:
- Briefing documents and presentations to the CEO, VP and Board on AMA’s current priorities, engagement and activities regarding informatics.
- Contributions to and review of provincial and national initiatives and priorities that impact informatics and AMA members.
