About the role

Position Title: Rail Loader

**Location:**1150 Stevenson Rd. S., Oshawa, ON

**Hours of Operation:**7:30 to 3:30PM. Monday to Saturday, Sundays and holidays as needed

**Status:**Part time, no guarantee of hours

**Type:**Existing Vacancy

Pay Rate:$25.13 per hour

**Incentive Pay:**Eligible for Piecework Rate Incentive

Summary of Position:

AWC Operations Canada (AWCC) performs many logistics functions. Some of these are real time yard management, real time data transfers, real time vehicle direct locating, dealer delivery, import / export preparations, rail car preparation and switching, rail car loading and unloading, and extensive assembly plant operations.

Rail Loaders are responsible for installing bridge plates, and loading vehicles on to railcars, driving customers finished product, and securing (chocking) the vehicles for transportation.

Essential Functions, Duties and Tasks:

  • Prepare the rail car for loading
  • Make sure Blue Flag protection is up
  • Install the bridge plates between the rail cars
  • Drive the vehicle from the staging area, onto the loading ramp and into the rail car
  • Park the vehicle, place the seat in the fully back position, place the seat cover, and turn all accessories off
  • Turn the vehicle off and exit the vehicle without causing damage
  • Raise/lower or remove bridge plates as needed
  • Exit the vehicle and connect the appropriate amount of chock blocks behind the wheels of the vehicle
  • Strap the wheels connecting the chock blocks, when required
  • Use a ratchet to appropriately tighten the straps, when required
  • Pulling pins/levers to drop the hinge deck lid after you load a deck, when required
  • Exit the train by climbing down the ladder railings on the outside of the rail car
  • Ensure the loading equipment has been properly inspected
  • Check vehicles for any damage and report to Supervisor or Manager
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized working environment, this includes tooling, work vans, rail yard, etc.
  • Participate in Van Driver rotation

Working Conditions:

  • Working outside (driving, walking, climbing) in all types of weather including extreme weather conditions
  • Work at a fast pace, getting in and out of vehicles and railcars
  • Work in tight spaces
  • Personal Protective Equipment provided includes safety vest, gloves, kneepads, and coveralls

This is a physically demanding position, which requires you to:

  • Lift, carry, push and pull up to 50lbs
  • Climbing / working at a height of 15 ft, in/out of rail cars via ladder
  • Stooping, crouching and bending, working in tight space
  • Get in/out of vehicles driver side door with minimal door opening clearance ( 12")
  • Sitting (driving vehicle)
  • Standing & Walking (working inside rail cars, walking in the yard)
  • Good visual ability
  • Good hearing ability

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities Required:

  • Exhibit behaviour and conduct that fosters a positive work atmosphere
  • Ability to interact with others effectively and communicate diplomatically
  • Ability to read, write and interpret documents (e.g., locations cards, work orders, vehicle identification numbers)
  • Ability to effectively react to change and work in a variety of situations
  • Ability to adhere to quality standards and safe work practices
  • Ability to use hand tools (e.g., wrench, screwdriver, hammer, ratchet, etc.)

Education, Experience, and Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent
  • Minimum one-year heavy labour experience
  • Minimum one-year driving experience
  • Valid full G driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Subject to third party Pre-employment Medical Assessment
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Background Check and Driver's Abstract will be required
