Position Summary
The Driver - Transportation will be responsible for providing ground transportation for hostel clients and escorts from the First Nations communities. Transportation will provide general outreach and interpretation for clients and perform routine maintenance and upkeep of the passenger vans.
Accountability
The Driver – Transportation will report directly to the Manager - Transportation.
Qualifications
- Persons of First Nations ancestry will be given preference (OHRC, Part II, Special Employment). Ability to communicate in one of the First Nations dialects in the Sioux Lookout Zone is an asset.
- Written and oral communication skills acceptable to the employer that meet the requirements of the role of Transportation Driver
- Previous experience working in a transportation environment would be an asset, but complete training will be provided.
- Must have a valid full G-class Driving license throughout employment as a Transportation Driver
- A valid and current driver’s abstract must be provided upon hire and deemed acceptable by SLFNHA.
- You must possess a minimum of five years of driving experience, with a valid and unrestricted full driving license
- Any further driving training, such as Defensive Driving, Driving with Dangerous Goods, would be an asset
- Experience in frontline Customer Service working in a fast-paced environment
- The ability to perform the requirements of the position on a regular basis
Roles & Responsibilities
- Provide transportation services for First Nations medical clients.
- Ensure that all passengers abide by safety laws and SLFNHA procedures (seat belts, child seats)
- Ensure all interaction with clients is courteous and respectful.
- Provide general outreach and interpreting services for clients
- Perform routine maintenance checks daily and complete all relevant documentation as required, such as circle checks, mileage sheets and drivers' logs.
- Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of all SLFNHA vehicles
- The transportation driver is expected to adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and posted signage strictly to always ensure safe and lawful operation of the vehicle.
- Any changes in driving status, including suspensions and driving offences, must be reported immediately to the supervisor before the next shift.
- Where appropriate, use of PPE is required as per training on infection control procedures
- Pick up and deliver agency mail (Sioux Lookout Only)
- Pick up trays and orange coolers and deliver to lab (Sioux Lookout Only)
- Pick up packages from pharmacies (Sioux Lookout Only)
- Pick up and deliver medical instruments to and from the hospital and the Northern Clinic (Sioux Lookout)
- Fill up the van and fill out gas information
- Plug the van in during the winter months when necessary
- Request supplies for van when needed
- Write up and submit incident reports
- Participate in and contribute to regular staff development activities and staff meetings
- Work as a team member with co-workers, SLFNHA staff and other organizations
- Assist when required and perform any other duties assigned
Working Conditions
- Some bending, lifting, and standing (lifting to 50lbs)
- Involves working outdoors in various weather conditions
- The role involves sitting for long periods and prolonged periods of concentration.
- Position involves differing shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays
