Reporting to the Director Wildlife Operations in Iqaluit, the Wildlife Manager for North Baffin is the key point of contact for the region to coordinate the delivery of the Department of Environment’s (DOE) programs. The Wildlife Manager ensures that Nunavummiut receive the maximum benefit from available renewable resources while maintaining environmental stewardship.

The Wildlife Manager is responsible for upholding territorial, interjurisdictional, national, and international wildlife management commitments. The Wildlife Manager works with seven local Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTO’s), one Regional Wildlife Organization (RWO) and regional liaison staff of the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB). The Wildlife Manager supervises the region’s Conservation Officer’s (CO) who are DOE’s closest link to the public. The Wildlife Manager is knowledgeable about the wildlife management issues and concerns facing harvesters in the region. The Manager issues and has input into permits for wildlife usage including fur and meat dealers, processing plants, outfitters, guides, wildlife research and observation.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through completion of Nunavut Arctic College’s Environmental Technology Program, plus six (6) years of relevant experience in wildlife management at both the field operations and management level. Three (3) years of supervisory experience is also required for this position. The candidate must hold a valid driver’s license; the ability to drive trucks, snowmobiles, ATV and boats is required. The candidate must hold a valid Firearms Possession and Acquisition License (PAL); the ability to carry a firearm is required. The following are considered assets: experience or education in enforcement, licensing and inspection techniques, experience in wilderness travel and survival skills, First Aid and CPR and WHMIS 2015 Certification. This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktitut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
