##Course Description/Relevant Employment****Duties

The Interdisciplinary Minor in Nuclear Studies and Society is intended for undergraduate students from all Faculties who wish to develop an essential understanding of the interdisciplinary nature of nuclear technology in society today. Nuclear studies play important roles in our society, including nuclear medicine, which contributes to advancements in medical imaging and cancer treatment through radioisotopes. Nuclear energy plays a substantial role in providing clean, reliable, and safe electricity. Students can also explore opportunities in nuclear engineering, focusing on the design, construction, and operation of nuclear reactors. The social side of nuclear studies requires professionals who can facilitate meaningful engagement between individuals and communities with the nuclear sector around issues of peace, ethics, and sustainability. This interdisciplinary approach prepares students to address complex challenges and harness opportunities within the nuclear sector, contributing to sustainable development and innovative solutions.

##NUCLST 4NN3: Nuclear Energy in Practice

This course is one of two culminating courses required to complete this minor.

Nuclear Energy in Practice is a classroom (virtual with limited online engagements) and field-based course (in-person) where students will visit various facilities in Ontario related to nuclear energy. The instructor will be expected to prepare the students for a 5-day field trip to various nuclear facilities across southern and northern Ontario. The instructor will also be expected to accompany students on the field trip, which will take place October 13 – 17, 2026 inclusive. The instructor will be involved with the assessment of students, which may include online assignments, reports, and/or oral exams (not inclusive). Transportation via coach bus and hotel and some meals will be provided while on the field trip. Students will apply to join this course in May 2026 and must have successfully completed both NUCLST 2N03 and ENGPHYS 3D04 for consideration. Students will be enrolled in Engineering or Science programs.

Required Qualifications– Post Secondary Degree

Preferred Qualifications– Five years or more relevant industry experience.
