About the role

Reporting to the Sr Facilities Manager, the Senior Building Maintenance Mechanic shall affect the necessary maintenance required for all Nordion buildings and site and direct the daily activities of subgroups including contractors, students and temporary help. This role will perform janitorial inspections and co-ordinate the effective completion of janitorial deficiencies.

This position is deemed a Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). A Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW) is defined by the Nuclear Safety and Control Act as a person who is required, in the course of the person’s business, or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public (1 mSv per year for the whole body).

Key Responsibilities

In conjunction with the manager, develop maintenance programs including the continual review of all SOP's and routine tests and controls to comply with GMP and ISO -9000 requirements.

Work in conjunction with the Maintenance Service Coordinator to ensure all scheduled Preventative Maintenance documentation is properly completed and signed.

As directed by manager, correspond directly with approved vendors and contractors to schedule and undertake necessary aspects of maintenance and capital projects.

Provide expertise and assist project leaders.

Make structural alterations and repairs to building interiors (Carpentry, painting, building hardware).

Make repairs to exterior areas (masonry, glazing, roofing).

Make repairs to snow removal, groundskeeping equipment and minor truck repairs. Dismantle/assemble/repair furniture, workstations and miscellaneous equipment.

Construct special items such as custom-built crates for packaging and shielding for trucks.

On behalf of the manager, distribute evenly amongst the Building Mechanics team regular routine inspections of building structural conditions, fire extinguishers, Nuclear Ventilation system, lighting system, performs said duties as part of the team, and initiates corrective actions or recommendations as required.

Performs routine operational tasks, make necessary adjustments, change filters to ensure that the Nuclear ventilation system operates within specified parameters.

Performs grounds keeping tasks such as pruning, planting, fertilizing, flowerbed preparation, etc.

Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Normally a Grade 12 education with 7 years’ building maintenance experience

Competence in at least one relevant building maintenance trade required

Skills and Competencies

Fully conversant with building structure and components and systems

Demonstrated leadership skills and must be able to provide trade support and direction to peers and project leaders.

Must have knowledge of mechanical systems with emphasis on ventilation systems.

Strong organizational skills

Competent in the use of all trade tools and carpenter shop operations.

Must work well in a team environment

Communicate effectively

Able to establish good rapport with customers both internally and externally

Strong documentation skills

Able to work under minimum supervision

Additional Requirements

Availability to work the required shift(s), overtime and on-call

Climb ladders

Wear a respirator for potentially several hours at a time

Work in proximity to asbestos on a rare basis. This work is well controlled and strict work procedures/personal protective equipment are to be followed/used. As part of Nordion’s Asbestos Management Program the candidate will be followed on a routine basis by the Occupational Health Physician
