About the opportunity

The Department of Family Medicine (Halifax Site), Dalhousie University and Nova Scotia Health (NSH) invite applications for a 1.0 FTE academic clinician researcher position. The Department seeks a 0.3 FTE research commitment to develop or continue an independent program of family medicine/primary care research (a focus in medical education is considered an asset), including the pursuit of local, national, and international grant-funded research using quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approaches. The successful candidate will be granted an academic appointment at Dalhousie University and be an active staff member with the Central Zone Department of Family Practice, NSH, and the IWK. This position offers exciting opportunities for professional development within academic family medicine in a dynamic department that includes over 800 community-based family physicians across 64 communities throughout the three Maritime provinces.

The successful candidate’s research activities will focus on developing family medicine/primary care research projects relevant to the discipline. The candidate will be expected to participate collaboratively as a member of research teams within the Department, including MD and/or PhD researchers and a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Primary Care. The role also includes providing support and mentorship to medical students, family medicine residents, graduate students, and non-research faculty in the development of family medicine/primary care research skills.

The remainder of the position includes 0.5 FTE in clinical care, specifically the provision of ambulatory, team-based, and comprehensive academic family medicine, including clinical supervision, teaching, and evaluation of medical learners. An interest in long-term care or obstetrics will be considered an asset. The remaining 0.2 FTE will be dedicated to non-clinical academic teaching and administrative activities.

The successful candidate must hold CCFP certification, be a current member in good standing with the College of Family Physicians of Canada and be eligible for full licensure in Nova Scotia. A thesis-based MSc/MA or PhD in a related health research discipline is required. Preference will be given to candidates with prior health-related research experience and experience supervising medical learners in clinical and research settings.

Academic rank and remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, with the appointment anticipated to commence as early as May 2026.
