About the Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced tax professional to lead our global tax function on a 12-18 month maternity leave contract. Reporting directly to the CFO, this highly autonomous role will oversee all aspects of tax compliance, reporting, planning and advisory. The successful candidate will partner with senior leadership on strategic initiatives, mentor a junior tax professional, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver results.

This is a remote position for applicants in Canada. Some travel to our office in Toronto, ON may be required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Champion organizational best practices to minimize tax leakage across multiple jurisdictions, including legal entity organization, transfer pricing, and educating the organization on best practices.
  • Lead quarterly and annual financial statement tax reporting processes, including coordination with third-party advisors, preparation and review of provision working papers, financial statement tax notes, and responding to auditor requests.
  • Manage the global income tax compliance cycle of the Tucows Group by coordinating with third-party advisors to ensure timely and accurate filing of tax returns.
  • Update and maintain transfer pricing processes and documentation, driving continuous improvement and leveraging technology whenever possible.
  • Oversee all indirect tax planning and compliance activities, establishing best practices and controls for sales, value-added, and other applicable tax regimes..
  • Support and coordinate compliance requirements for new product launches, business expansions, and restructuring activities.
  • Monitor legislative changes in U.S., Canada, and key international tax laws, working with advisors to assess and address impacts on the company.
  • Perform ad hoc tax research and projects, prepare tax memoranda, analyze business cases, and support M&A opportunities and other strategic initiatives.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to tax team member, supporting their professional development and ensuring their effective contribution to the team's deliverables.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Minimum 10 years of progressive tax experience.
  • Excels as an individual contributor; curious and resourceful in overcoming knowledge gaps.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and execute under tight timelines.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and demonstrates a "trust, but verify" approach.
  • Experience in the telecommunications sector is an asset.
  • Skilled at managing external tax advisors and building cooperative relationships with internal finance and accounting teams.
  • Strong collaborator with peers and senior management to deliver quality outputs within time constraints.
  • Technical expertise in one or more of the following is advantageous:
    • ASC 740 (US GAAP)
    • Canadian and US tax
    • Global sales /indirect tax
    • Transfer pricing

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • CPA designation or legal tax background strongly preferred.

The base salary range for this position is $160,000 to $220,000. Range shown in $CAD for Canadian residents. Other countries will differ. Range may vary on a number of factors including, but not limited to: location, experience and qualifications.
