About the role
The Custodial - Office Cleaner works under the general supervision of the Foreman Grade 3. The incumbent is responsible for cleaning of civic buildings, furnishing and fixtures; minor ground maintenance work; any building operations duties, such as locking and unlocking doors; and passive security duties to keep civic buildings in a clean, sanitary and safe condition.
As the Custodial Office Cleaner you will:
- Cleaning of civic buildings, furnishings and fixtures.
- Empty wastepaper baskets and recycling bins and remove all waste to a designated area.
- Wet and dry mop various flooring surfaces, vacuum carpets, walk-off mats, chairs, and furnishings.
- Cleaning of washrooms.
- Clean and disinfect washroom fixtures, hand basins, counters, toilets, urinals, walls, exposed plumbing pipes, dispensers, metal partitions, drinking fountains, doors and frames.
- Empty and disinfect all waste receptacles and disposal units
- Minor grounds maintenance work and building operations duties.
- Removes debris around buildings, shovel snow, keeping walks, entrances and emergency exit doors clear, safe and operational year-round.
- Assists with moving furniture.
- Perform other duties consistent with the classification as assigned.
Your education and qualifications include:

Grade 10 or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Six (6) months prior experience in an Office Cleaner/Custodial position in facilities such as office buildings, hospitals, schools or similar work environment.

Experience in the application of cleaning products.

Ability to use commercial cleaning products and equipment.

Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ability to deal with employees and general public in a professional and respectful manner.

Organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks within tight timelines.

Verbal communication skills with ability to understand and execute instructions.

Written communication skills with the ability to complete documents such as logs and reports clearly and concisely.

- Must possess and maintain a St. John’s Ambulance Emergency First Aid Certificate or equivalent OR have the ability to obtain it within three (3) months.
- The successful applicant(s) will be required to provide CSA-approved personal protective safety boots (six (6) inches above the ankle) at their own expense.
