We are seeking a Rail Systems Design Lead to join our Arup Americas North Geography rail team and help in leading rail systems designs and implementations on our active projects. We are looking for someone with experience and a passion for leading our rail engineering systems project teams, embedding rail systems and integration into the planning and delivery of rail projects, and creation of opportunities where innovative value solutions can be implemented.
The role will be based in our Toronto office. The successful candidate will report to the Canada Rail Systems Leader and should be familiar with and have minimum 5 years of hands-on experience overseeing and managing the following categories of rail systems work:
- Development of rail systems performance and technical specifications
- Rail systems designs and delivery in collaboration with contractors and suppliers
- RAM and systems safety and security
- Systems integration
- Interface management
- Systems assurance and requirements management
- Validation and verification (V&V) including testing and commissioning
- Systems performance modelling
- Operational and maintenance performance optimization
Disciplines involved in delivering the above listed services will include: Rolling stock, signaling and train control, communication and traffic management systems and all forms of electrification, permanent way designs, systems engineering and integration (including specialist areas such as safety, RAM, EMC, EMI, N&V, etc.), Performance modelling (including timetable, network and power modelling), maintenance planning and asset management

The opportunity
- Ensuring that the correct skills are assigned to serve the project needs
- Leading and managing the project rail systems design team
- Supporting integration processes such as definition and control of the System Architecture, Requirements Management, and project knowledge database.
- Working in concert with Americas and Geography Rail Systems Leaders and other Americas North disciplines, to ensure successful project delivery
- Developing and maintaining client relationships
- Developing compelling solutions and presenting to clients;
- Collaborating on programs for digital rail /virtual rail through such tools as data engineering, BIM and GIS
- Sharing knowledge and best practices and help in developing of the Americas North Geography rail systems team competencies

Is this role right for you?
- Over 10 years’ experience in the rail systems engineering gained both in the Americas and internationally
- 5 years of leading responsibility in system design, integration, interfacing, design management, operation and maintenance planning for large rail projects in a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Registered Professional Engineer P.Eng. License
- Broad experience across the Rail Systems disciplines with specialization in at least one rail systems discipline.
- A familiarization in Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) and traditional relay-based systems and signaling principles; a specialization being an advantage
- Demonstrable understanding of the application System Safety Certification processes and RAMS
- Knowledgeable in railway standards such as CENELEC, AREMA, MIL-STD, IEEE and EN
- Demonstrable understanding of the application of Systems and safety engineering concepts, including design for safety, verification & validation, and system integration
- Thorough understanding of the how rail advisory and technical skills apply across a project life-cycle.
- Demonstrable understanding of the implications of digital and data in the planning and development of rail systems
- Experience in working for both prime clients (Owners) and design-build contractors in the delivery of major rail projects in the Americas and internationally
- Ability to communicate across all levels of project and client team organizations, with excellent team and client relationship skills.

Toronto Hiring Range– Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Toronto is $190,000 to $200,000 per year.**This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary.**Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of Toronto will differ.
