The High-Pressure Metallurgy Group (HPM) is a specialized technology group within Hatch providing consulting, design and commissioning services to our mining Clients in pressure-leach or pressure-oxidation processing. HPM is a known world leader in mine and metallurgical plant design. The HPM Group are involved in projects of all sizes, from small plant improvement studies to larger feasibility studies and execution of world class EPCM projects spanning multiple years.
We are currently seeking a Junior Welding Engineering Technologist New Graduate, to join our team in Mississauga. This role involves supporting engineering and quality assurance efforts through hands-on inspection, documentation review, and technical development in welding and fabrication.
The Junior Welding Engineering Technologist will be responsible for conducting visual inspections of vendor fabrications, reviewing welding and quality-related documentation, and building expertise in inspection, welding, fabrication, and construction practices, leading to future engagement as a project quality coordinator. The successful candidate must be able to work from our Mississauga office and be available for international travel to support global projects, including site visits and vendor audits.
As the successful candidate, you will:
- Review incoming vendor quality documentation, including welding procedure specifications (WPS’s) and procedure qualification records (PQR’s), welder qualification records, inspection and test plans (ITP’s), quality plans, etc. for compliance to project requirements.
- Review and enforce project specifications for welding processes, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, and non-destructive examination (NDE).
- Troubleshoot fabrication quality issues at vendor and site locations.
- Analyze physical and chemical laboratory test reports.
- Inspect pressure vessel fabrication and oversee field welding projects.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (e.g., ASME Section VIII-I, IX, CSA W59, 47.1 & AWS D1.1).
- Provide technical support to engineers and procurement teams.
- Participate in domestic and international site visits, audits, and inspections as required.
- Be available and willing to travel internationally, sometimes on short notice, for extended periods depending on project needs.
You bring to the role:
- Completion of a 2–3-year College Diploma in Welding Technology, Metallurgical Technology, or a related field.
- Possession of, or capability of obtaining certification as a Welding Inspector, minimum Level 1 to CSA W178.1.
- Experience in fabrication, construction, or other trades is beneficial.
- Basic knowledge of welding metallurgy and weldability of various base metals (e.g., austenitic and duplex stainless steels, carbon steels, nickel alloys, titanium, tantalum).
- Familiarity with NDE methods (MT, PT, UT, RT) and relevant codes (ASME V, VIII-1, IX, B31.3, CSA W59).
- Valid passport and ability to travel internationally without restrictions.
Skills and Competencies:
- Technical Skills: Welding process selection, inspection, testing, and equipment operation.
- Analytical Skills: Evaluating data, diagnosing issues, and projecting outcomes.
- Planning & Organization: Coordinating projects, scheduling tasks, and managing resources.
- Communication: Advising teams, writing reports, and liaising with stakeholders.
- Problem-Solving: Identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.
- Adaptability: Comfortable working in diverse environments and cultures globally.
Work Environment:
The work environment will include a mix of office and industrial settings such as fabrication shops, construction sites, and manufacturing plants. May involve physical activity, close proximity to others, and exposure to heat, noise, and fumes. Frequent travel, up to 50% may be required, including to remote or international locations.
