The Lead Athletic Therapist & Sports Medicine Coordinator, under the direction of the Director of Athletics and Recreation, develops, organizes and implements the day-to-day athletic therapy operations of the Mohawk College Athletic Department. The incumbent functions as the primary clinical authority for athlete health and safety, operating with a high degree of autonomy and accountability. The incumbent requires expert-level clinical judgement, leadership of interdisciplinary care and coordination of complex sports medicine systems, with direct impact on institutional risk, athlete outcomes and program performance. This includes, but is not limited to: health education, prevention, immediate care, assessment and rehabilitation of athlete’s sport related injuries (varsity athletes and staff), coordination of day-to-day clinic operations and to provide an exceptional learning experience for Athletic Therapy, Massage Therapy and Kinesiology placement students. The incumbent leads the sports medicine portfolio and coordinates interdisciplinary care with strength and conditioning, sports medicine physicians and additional health related disciplines to ensure a comprehensive program is developed for the high performance athletes.

What you’ll be doing:

Practice, Competition & Clinical Coverage

  • Provides on-site coverage at practices, competitions and championship games.
  • Coordinates additional medical coverage when necessary at events.
  • Responds to and manages injuries, including: assessing whether an athlete can return to play, must sit out the remainder of the event, and/or must seek further medical attention; providing initial treatment for medical emergencies (e.g. fractures/dislocations, severe blood loss, spinal injuries, shock related to injury, heat illnesses/hypothermia, concussion management, and loss of consciousness and other deteriorating signs and symptoms, etc.) and contacting Emergency Medical Services (ambulance).
  • Performs clinical assessments and treatments on athletes, making external referrals when indicated.
  • Assesses athletes with concussion symptoms and provides rehabilitation throughout protocol to ensure a safe return to school & sport.
  • Responsible for making high-risk decisions with outcomes that are high-impact on athlete safety and institutional liability.
  • Determines athlete’s status for being removed from practices & games and is responsible for return-to-play and return-to-learn decisions.
  • Coordinates care of athletes in time-sensitive, high-pressure situations.
  • Demonstrates autonomy in clinical decisions. Functions as a primary clinical decision maker. Exercises independent professional judgement in both routine and non-routine and/or high-risk injury situations.
  • Independently assesses and manages complex musculoskeletal injuries for multi-sport program, making critical return-to-play decisions.
  • Implements post-op protocols with athletes who underwent surgery, ensuring they are cleared to progress through the protocol and return to play with simultaneous clearance from the surgeon.

Guiding & Administrative Duties

  • Oversight of assistant Athletic Therapists as well as placement students from various therapy/rehabilitation programs across the province.
  • Key lead in working with institutions to secure student athletic therapy placements.
  • Provides an exceptional experiential learning experience to students.
  • Mentors and guides therapy staff, students and interns operationally, giving direction on-field and clinically.
  • Operates as a key resource for colleagues within the sports medicine portfolio.
  • Record keeping, ensuring they are completed in a timely manner for all therapy students and ensure staff & student therapists are compliant with Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).
  • Oversees confidential, sensitive and regulated information with regards to athlete pre-season medical submissions and ongoing clinical documentation.
  • Ensures accurate medical documentation for student-athletes and data integrity.
  • Keeps patient files accurate and documents up to date.
  • Note keeping on all athletic therapy assessments and treatments.
  • Scheduling of assistant therapists and student therapists to reduce liability at college/OCAA sanctioned events.
  • Administers and reviews collection of pre-season medical data to provide athlete clearance for participation or physician referral when indicated.
  • Ensures the Athletic therapy clinic has supplies, clinical resources, cleanliness and orders equipment.
  • Ensures clinic equipment adheres to safety requirements & is maintained properly.
  • Leads training and onboarding of sports medicine staff and student therapists (including administrative duties, emergency response, injury management, taping, clinical assessment and treatment etc.).
  • Oversees medical clearances and liability-related decisions.
  • Autonomously interprets and ensures compliance with legislation, professional standards and institutional policies.
  • Develops and implements risk management strategies to ensure best practices are being met in order to support organizational risk mitigation.
  • Accountable for athletes’ health, safety and medical risk management.
  • Develops & oversees implementation of injury prevention programs and emergency action planning.
  • Development & implementation of concussion protocol.
  • Conducts and oversees baseline concussion testing annually.
  • Oversight and guidance of massage therapy student outreaches in the varsity clinic.
  • Communicates with coaches, strength & conditioning team and Athletic Director regarding new injuries, injury statuses and return to sport timelines on a daily basis regarding the health, safety and performance of the student-athletes.
  • Liaison and support for sports medicine physician and orthopaedic surgeons.
  • Oversight of strength and conditioning coaches & students and program development. Ensures target outcomes are met, scheduling, reducing injuries with load management and appropriate implementation.
  • Refers athletes to counsellors when warranted (identify high risk athletes with regular checks and through on-on-one interactions in clinic).
  • Regularly communicates with athletes to follow up on injuries.
  • Liaises with coaches and Manager to develop and coordinate schedules.
  • Ensures Mohawk is compliant with OCAA game day requirements.
  • Participates on working committees for special OCAA, CCAA or college hosting requirements and be a representative at OCAA meetings.
  • Ensuress compliance of athletes & coaches with Sport Integrity Canada and applicable OCAA/CCAA waivers.
  • Evaluates and continually improves sports medicine program effectiveness.
  • Leads the sports medicine portfolio and coordinates interdisciplinary care while supporting organizational objectives (Mountaineer Performance Indicators, college and department strategic plan etc).

Professional Development

  • Continued development of best practices in Athletic Therapy & Sports Medicine portfolio, ensuring that Mohawk Athletics stays ahead of the industry in terms of quality of care and advancing technology.

Policies and Procedures

  • Assists in the Athletic Department’s development of Processes and Procedures including but not limited to: Risk Management policy and procedure(s), Emergency Action Plan(s), other college wide health and safety procedures, implementation of OCAA and CCAA specific policies and procedures.
  • Supports and acts in accordance with the athletic departments and college’s strategic plans and core values.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • 4 year degree in an Athletic Therapy accredited program.
  • 3 years of experience in operating a clinic, preferably at a post-secondary institution.
  • Knowledge of sports that Mohawk offers as part of its high-performance program is considered an asset.
  • Must have passed board certification exam and be a regulated health professional.
  • Demonstrated commitment and understanding of human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
