About Casey House

As Canada’s first and only stand-alone hospital for people living with HIV or at risk for HIV. We provide compassionate, stigma-free, and equitable care for people living with and at risk of HIV, many of whom face systemic barriers such as substance use, mental health challenges, poverty, and homelessness. Rooted in harm reduction, people-centred care, and health equity, our inpatient unit offers sub-acute care, respite, and end of life support.

As a Registered Nurse (RN) on the inpatient unit, you will deliver holistic, evidence-based, trauma-informed, and people-centred care to adults living with and at risk of HIV. You will work within an interprofessional team to provide medical, emotional, and harm reduction support while upholding Casey House purpose, values, and philosophy of care.

About the Opportunity

We currently have an opportunity for four (4) Inpatient Registered Nurses to join our team in Toronto, ON, on a part**-time, casual basis (OPSEU bargaining unit).**

Hours of Work: 12 hour shifts within a 24-hour staffed hospital environment (both days and nights required). This is a fully on-site position

Develop your mental health and harm reduction skills in a small inpatient unit housed in a modern light-filled, purpose-built facility. Nurses work in partnership with physicians and an allied health team to provide values-led care for 14 patients with diverse needs. Engage in bedside nursing with a harm reduction approach to care for clinically complex medical issues, including opportunistic infections, early aging, oncologic and cardiovascular health concerns, often coupled with psychiatric and substance use challenges. Casey House is the first to offer hospital-based supervised consumption services (SCS), available right on the unit.

More specifically, your responsibilities in this role will entail, but are not restricted to:

  • Developing meaningful nurse-client relationships by using a harm reduction, anti-oppressive, social justice, and trauma-informed framework
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection prevention, and adherence to best practices.
  • Support a safe and inclusive environment, respecting diversity and promoting equity in care delivery.
  • Provide comprehensive nursing care to clients with complex medical needs including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care plans.
  • Collaborate daily with an interprofessional team to ensure coordinated, high-quality, evidence-informed care.
  • Promote health education, adherence to treatment, and other harm reduction strategies.
  • Direct client care , encompassing but not limited to palliative care, advanced wound care, post-surgical recovery, care for clients undergoing radiation/ chemotherapy care, rehabilitation, and mental health support.
  • Mentors students, and new staff.
  • Role model practice with Casey Houses’ values and philosophy of care.

About You

In order to qualify for this role, you will need:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • Current member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), licensed to practice without restrictions.
  • Up to date Basic Life Support (BCLS) and CPR
  • Clinical experience working in acute care, HIV care, or harm reduction is an asset. Experience working with marginalized communities, including people who use drugs, people experiencing homelessness, and 2SLGBTQ+, is an asset.
  • Membership in RNAO, CANAC and/or ANAC is an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively in an interprofessional team.
  • Knowledge and application of evidence-informed practice, infection prevention and control, and medication administration standards.
  • Good understanding of the principles of people-centered care
  • Excellent nursing assessment, critical thinking, clinical judgment, care planning, communication, and documentation skills in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) standards and hospital policies.
  • Proficiency in the use of electronic health records (EPIC experience an asset)
  • Strong record of reliability and attendance
  • Commitment to continuous learning, quality improvement, and culturally safe care.

About the Benefits

Hourly wage: $39.07 - $56.00 / hour, as well as the following benefits:

  • Pay in lieu for vacation (6%) and benefits (14%)
  • Participation in Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (pay in lieu of benefits is 10% instead of 14% if participating).
