About the role
The Cell 1 Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient handling, melting, and processing of various raw materials, including cocoa butter, oil, liquor, and butterfat, to support production requirements. This role also includes powder handling activities within the Powder Room, such as material dosing, weighing, and dumping operations. The Cell 1 Operator is cross-trained across all Cell 1 functions and may be required to operate an overhead crane, vacuum lifts, powered walkies, and forklifts to facilitate material movement throughout the facility. A strong commitment to food safety, quality, operational excellence, and employee safety is essential in all aspects of the role.
Key responsibilities
Prepare the work area for melting and powder handling operations, including staging, verifying, and organizing raw materials according to production requirements. Start up, monitor, and operate melting and powder processing equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures. Monitor production processes to ensure continuous, safe, and efficient operation while meeting quality standards. Verify production orders and confirm the correct materials are being processed, including cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, oils, and butterfat. Safely melt and transfer materials to designated tanks, ensuring product integrity and accurate inventory management. Utilize SAP to initiate production orders, verify material usage, record consumption, and complete required transactions. Read, monitor, and coordinate tank inventories to ensure accuracy and availability of materials. Maintain a clean, organized, and food-safe work environment, including completion of Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS) tasks and documentation. Complete daily equipment inspections, quality checks, and safety verifications to ensure equipment is operating effectively and safely. Accurately complete all required production, sanitation, quality, and safety documentation. Communicate production status, equipment concerns, inventory information, and shift activities to the incoming Shift Lead and team members during shift transitions. Learn, perform, and provide support across all Cell 1 functions, including toting, melting, powder handling, and material movement activities. Operate material handling equipment such as overhead cranes, vacuum lifts, powered walkies, and forklifts following certification and training requirements. Adhere to all Barry Callebaut Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), HACCP requirements, food safety programs, and quality standards. Support and comply with Barry Callebaut Operating System (BCOS) initiatives, including Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), Lean Manufacturing principles, and continuous improvement activities. Follow all established safety procedures, utilize required personal protective equipment (PPE), and promote a culture of workplace safety. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.
About you
High school diploma or equivalent required. Previous experience in a food manufacturing or industrial production environment is considered an asset. Experience using SAP or similar enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is an asset. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and commitment to product quality. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and food safety standards.
Environmental / Working Conditions
Ability to move freely throughout the manufacturing facility. Ability to regularly lift and carry up to 55 lbs. Ability to stand and walk on concrete floors for extended periods. Frequent bending, squatting, reaching, stretching, pushing, and pulling. Ability to frequently climb stairs and access elevated work areas. Comfortable working at heights and around industrial processing equipment. Ability to work in varying temperatures and environmental conditions within the facility. Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) and comply with all health and safety requirements.
