Reporting to the Foreman, the Lead Hand is responsible for supporting daily highway maintenance operations, including snow and ice control, road repairs, and routine maintenance. This role combines equipment operation with on-site crew leadership to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of maintenance activities.

Note: This position is based out of Olds, AB and the successful candidate must reside within 30 minutes of the shop or be willing to relocate.

How You’ll Add Value

  • Actively contribute to the safety culture by promoting a safe and productive work environment
  • Operate and maintain highway maintenance equipment, including plow trucks, loaders, and other heavy equipment
  • Coordinate highway maintenance activities and ensure effective deployment and productivity of work crews, equipment, and resources to meet highway operations safety, schedule, quality objectives
  • Provide on-site leadership and guidance to crew members by delegating tasks, monitoring work quality, providing constructive feedback and recognition, and fostering a culture of collaboration and growth
  • Monitor productivity and compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards
  • Conduct safety meetings and field-level hazard assessments to identify and mitigate risks
  • Assist with worksite planning to ensure safe, efficient, and organized operations
  • Support orientation and training of new team members on tasks, equipment, and safety procedures
  • Address public inquiries courteously and professionally, representing Volker Stevin Highways with integrity
  • Step into a leadership role as the delegate for the Foreman when required, ensuring continuity of field operations
  • Maintain accurate records, including daily time sheets, tailgate meetings, and incident reports
  • Perform physical, outdoor work in varying weather conditions, including winter storm response and plow operations

The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following: Qualifications & Experience

  • 3+ years of experience in highway maintenance operations is required
  • 3+ years of plow truck operating experience is required; loader or other heavy equipment experience is an asset
  • Prior leadership or crew supervision experience is an asset
  • Completion of Alberta Construction Safety Association (ACSA) courses is an asset
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with a Driver’s Abstract showing no more than 6 demerits and no major infractions is required; a Class 1 Driver’s License is preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude with the ability to perform basic equipment checks and maintenance
  • Strong decision-making skills and a high degree of safety awareness
  • Flexibility to work long hours, shifts, on-call, or night work in various weather conditions, with readiness to travel within the contract area as required

Note: As this is a safety-sensitive role, the successful candidate is required to complete pre-access Alcohol & Drug Testing.
