Ingenia Polymers is a rapidly growing international manufacturer operating in the Petrochemicals and Plastics Industries. We seek a Co-op student to work with on a new product development in the field of polymer processing.
Job Summary:
Ingenia's Research and Development group in Brantford, ON is looking for a chemical engineer, polymers engineer, or polymer scientist, with a strong background in polymer processing and rheology. The successful Co op student will work closely with one of our Research Scientists on a new product development in the area of polymer processing. This is a specific existing product development which needs to be accelerated due to a strong market need. Development work in this position involves design of experiments, raw materials evaluations, process and equipment evaluations, formulation, scale-up support from laboratory trials to production, plant support, and technical service in support of commercialization. Specifically, work will include lab-scale twin-screw compounding of novel formulations, rheological measurements (capillary and parallel plate), evaluation of materials in blown film and cast film extrusion in our pilot lab and physical and analytical testing of finished product properties. This is an exciting opportunity to learn, develop and contribute in a dynamic, technology driven, entrepreneurial environment on an impactful project.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for development of a new products, with the aim of commercialization, for Ingenia's proprietary products group. This includes development of polyolefin additive formulations, and related processing and analytical methods. This involves:
- Literature and patent review
- Design of experiments, and evaluation of a new product in Ingenia's applications lab.
- Execution of experiments via batch and twin-screw extruder compounding, measurement of rheological properties and processing of compounds on blown film and cast film extruders and measurement of product properties via analytical techniques.
- Coordinating with other team members including the Research Scientist, marketing, technical service, production, and support personnel to achieve project objectives.
- Learn and practice Safety.
- Develop technical solutions through hands-on experimentation.
- Document lab results and recommendations via timely and comprehensive reporting.
Required Skills:
- The student should be actively enrolled in a Bachelors, Masters or PhD in Chemical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, or Polymers Science & Engineering.
- Knowledge of twin screw extrusion compounding, and downstream conversion processes.
- Knowledge of rheology, polymer processing, structure-property relations, interface science, and polymer blends.
- Mechanical aptitude.
- Project and time management - ability to manage long term projects with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work cooperatively as part of a cross-functional team with peers, managers and technicians.
- Process, analytical and mechanical skills to execute laboratory work, and generate process solutions for scale-up.
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills. Ability to communicate professionally, both internally and to customers and suppliers.
- Proficient in data analysis, DOE and statistical methods.
