Job Summary:
As a Carpenter Supervisor, you will manage the planning, prioritization, coordination and execution of carpentry operations onboard vessels and throughout the shipyard. Your responsibilities include directing the carpentry team to ensure efficient workload management, high-quality workmanship and timely completion of projects. You will also provide leadership and support to maintain a high performing team, ensuring all work adheres to safety standards, regulatory requirements and project specifications.
Key Responsibilities/Duties:
- Promote adherence to safety protocols among team members and participate in accident investigations, implement corrective actions, and address safety hazards.
- Ensure that all work is completed in accordance with all Health and Safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
- Act as a hands-on working supervisor, leading by example while managing direct reports and collaborating with the supervisory team to provide updates on work scopes, worker issues, workforce planning, equipment needs, and safety requirements.
- Ensure the completion of tasks and job scopes.
- Participate in daily “toolbox” meetings with direct reports.
- Perform administrative activities necessary for the effective management of the team, including participating in interviews, development of employees, planning, organizing, and documenting executed work.
- Assess employee performance, provide ongoing feedback and coaching, and conduct progressive discipline when necessary.
- Oversee and inspect carpentry tasks to ensure compliance with project deadlines, specifications, and quality standards, including constructing keel blocks and assembling wind blockers.
- Review technical specifications, drawings, and project requirements, coordinating schedules for carpentry activities to support shipbuilding and repair operations.
- Prepare project quality documents, manage carpentry equipment, maintain inventory, and oversee waste disposal, ensuring safety and environmental regulations compliance.
- Demonstrate flexibility to meet deadlines, proactively identifying and addressing potential delays while proposing solutions to management.
- Collaborate and assist colleagues with daily operational needs.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested to support operations.
Requirements:
- Strong commitment to safety and strict adherence to safety protocols.
- High school diploma or equivalent (Preferred).
- Previous experience in ship repair / marine industry is considered an asset.
- Possess 7+ years of hands-on carpentry experience in construction or maintenance settings.
- At least 3+ years of supervisory experience in a similar role, with a proven track record of leading a team.
- A valid Red Seal Trade Certification 403A is considered an asset.
- Demonstrate the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
- Must have adequate physical fitness to fulfill demanding tasks with a willingness to work in various weather conditions year-round.
