About the role

Employee Relations Advisor for provincial government agency client, North York office.

Marberg Job Number: 2744.

Job Type: Temporary.

Initial Term: ASAP for approximately 1 year, with possibility of extension or direct hire.

Existing Vacancy: Yes.

Target Compensation: $50 per hour, with some flexibility according to experience.

Regular Work Hours: 7.25 hours per day not including .75 hour unpaid lunch break (36.25 work hours per week). Shift flexibility and additional paid hours may be required according to client business need, including evenings and weekends during peak periods.

Work Location: 100% onsite at client's mid-town Toronto office. No parking on-site.

Position Reports To: HR Manager.

Supervisory Responsibility: Dotted line supervisory and training responsibilities for employee relations officers.

Responsibilities Summary:

Work collaboratively with HR team to provide employee relations advisory services to a portfolio of internal clients.

  • Respond to complex employee relations, performance management or interpersonal employee issues as they arise, working in close communication with other organizational leaders in a professional, tactful manner.
  • Coach and advise staff members on HR best practices, and execute remediation plans where necessary to ensure adherence to organizational policies and HR best practices.
  • Build a team of dedicated employee relations associate/officers to support the organization.
  • Work with Operations to develop a dedicated HR platform to answer all questions relating to HR and employee investigations.
  • Collaborate with divisional business owners and use superior judgment and business awareness to provide risk-based advice.
  • Participate in formal HR investigations processes where necessary as an advisor on employee relations.
  • Represent organization's HR department in a variety of contexts with employees of all seniority levels.
  • Additional employee relations responsibilities as required.

Qualifications:

Education: Post Secondary Degree in Human Resources, Industrial Relations, or related field.

Professional Credentials: CHRP or similar designation required.

Preferred Work Experience: At least 5+ years of experience in an HR advisory position with significant employee relations responsibilities.

Preferred Sector Experience: Demonstrated experience working with unionized and non-unionized employees, preferably in a public, non-profit or regulatory sector environment.

Leadership Experience and Skills: Well-developed coaching, training, initiative and team leadership skills to apply to a busy, rapidly changing working environment.

Technical and Language Skills Requirements:

  • Strong knowledge of MSOffice Suite, including Excel and PowerPoint (may be tested).
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems an asset.
  • Strong English communication skills, including advanced level business writing skills and verbal presentation skills suitable for a diverse range of audiences including senior leadership.

Task -Based Qualifications and Additional Attributes:

  • Demonstrated record of professional conduct and character. Responsible, reliable and works to deadlines.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of employee relations, including principles and best practices, theories and trends, related legislation (e.g., Ontario Labour Relations Act, MOL, Employment Standards Act and the Ontario Human Rights Code).
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex employee relations concerns, with an emphasis on conflict resolution, risk mitigation, and investigations.
  • Sophisticated, tactful communications skills to effectively work with a variety of temperaments and seniority levels in a personable and professional manner.
  • Strong collaborative working skills, with the ability to quickly build rapport and garner respect from colleagues to inform advisory efficacy.
  • Proficient de-escalation skills. Ability to surmount internal and external job pressures. Excellent listening skills, and the ability to provide and receive effective feedback.
  • Proven ability to respond to sensitive and confidential matters with tact, discretion, and excellent judgement in the interpretation and application of instructions and organization policy.
  • Demonstrated successful experience of prioritizing work, making decisions and communicating with others within a values framework of respect, equity, anti-racism, diversity and inclusivity.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, providing satisfactory documentation upon request.
  • Ability to work 100% onsite, abiding by organization health and safety policies
  • Ability to declare personal Non-Conflict of Interest in execution of assignment responsibilities.
  • Provision of certification of AODA and OHSA online training course completion prior to assignment start.
  • Satisfactory Background Checks, Interpersonal Skills Assessment, Technical Skills Evaluations, and Employment References.
