About the role

The Assistant Sanitation Supervisor supports the 3rd-shift Supervisor in executing all sanitation tasks for a 24-hour cleaning rotation. This role provides hands-on leadership, ensures team compliance with sanitation standards, and coordinates daily cleaning activities. This position will also oversee and support the assigned company and department goals.

Essential Duties and responsibilities

  • Lead by example during equipment teardown, foaming, scrubbing, rinsing, sanitizing, and reassembly.
  • Verify cleaning effectiveness and escalate deficiencies to the Supervisor.
  • Assist with maintaining sanitation logs, chemical usage records, and SSOP documentation.
  • Monitor chemical inventories and report needs.
  • Ensure sanitation crews follow SSOPs, GMPs, and safety guidelines.
  • Support pre-operational inspections and help address corrective actions.
  • Participate in environmental monitoring (allergen verification, swabbing).
  • Uphold LOTO, PPE, and chemical safety procedures.
  • Report equipment damage, safety hazards, or sanitation issues.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives and sanitation efficiency projects
  • Ensure all sanitation tasks meet HACCP, and company food-safety standards
  • Perform and document pre-op inspections; correct any non-conformance before production startup.
  • Collaborate with QA teams during environmental & micro swabbing.
  • Participate in internal/external audits as needed

Communication:

  • Communicate with Scheduling, Quality Assurance, Dry Storage, and Warehouse ensuring the plant floor is released timely to the Quality Assurance Department to perform Pre-Op testing to position them to release the line to operations timely.

  • Plans and schedules manpower, cleaning schedules, releases the entire production floor timely and to effectively and efficiently utilize departmental policies and procedures fairly and equitably to maintain standards established for safety, quality and overall company personnel satisfaction

Leadership and Direction:

  • Assist with directing, scheduling, and monitoring sanitation crew activities.

  • Serve as the acting supervisor during absences or assigned rotations.

  • Help train employees on sanitation procedures, safety, and equipment handling.

  • Provide real-time coaching and corrective guidance.

  • Assign tasks and manage workload of unionized hourly employees to ensure KPI’s are achieved.

  • Ensure time and attendance records for all hourly personnel are accurate and up-to-date.

Problem Solving:

  • Develops and recommends improvements of facilities, equipment, cleaning procedures, pest control issues, chemical concerns or procedures to improve safety, quality, and efficiency when issues and problems arise.

  • Develops and recommends solutions to problems that may arise during the course of the night when preparing for set up, pre-op, other issues that may arise.

Analysis:

  • Maintains work flow by monitoring steps of the sanitation process; setting processing variables; observing control points and equipment; monitoring personnel and resources; studying methods; implementing cost reductions; developing reporting procedures and systems; facilitating corrections to malfunctions within process control points; initiating and fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.
  • Provides information by compiling, initiating, sorting and analyzing sanitation, pest control and chemical performance records and data, answering questions and responding to requests.

Qualifications

  • 1–3 years of sanitation experience in a food manufacturing environment.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in a leadership or lead hand role required.
  • Working knowledge of sanitation chemicals, CIP/COP, and food safety requirements.

Working conditions

Plant Environment:

The plant work environment will expose the employee to loud noise, food grade dust & odors, moving & vibrating machinery, heavy equipment, powered industrial trucks, heights, traffic, anhydrous ammonia, oil and electricity. The employee may be exposed to adverse weather conditions including extreme cold, heat, rain, snow, dust, smoke and odors. Flexibility of work hours. Ability to work on feet for extended periods of time if needed.

Physical requirements/Allergens

Lifting, pushing, and pulling of approximately 70 pounds and prolonged standing and walking.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, sit, talk, listen, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to use hands to handle, operate, and feel objects, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to operate a motor vehicle to travel to off-site meetings. The employee must have visual acuity sufficient to operate a motor vehicle and digital camera, as well as other office and position equipment. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must be able to hear and speak clearly in order to communicate with clients, coworkers, employees and vendors.
