About the role

Northback is a Canadian company focused on the development of the Grassy Mountain steelmaking coal project in Crowsnest Pass, Alberta.

We are currently seeking an experiencedCommercial & Procurement Managerto join our team in Calgary. Reporting to the General Counsel, the Commercial & Procurement Manager is responsible for overseeing the organization’s commercial strategy, procurement execution and contract management functions to ensure value, compliance and effective risk management across all projects. This role leads complex commercial and contract negotiations, drafts and reviews a wide range of contractual agreements and manages end-to-end sourcing processes.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Commercial

  • Lead commercial negotiations with suppliers, contractors, and service providers to secure optimal terms, pricing, risk allocation, and performance commitments.
  • Own commercial risk identification and mitigation for major contracts, including maintaining the commercial risk register.
  • Advise internal stakeholders and coordinate cross-functional input on commercial implications of project decisions, scopes of work, procurement approach, and contract terms.
  • Lead commercial planning for major project phases, including contracting strategies, negotiation positions, and supporting commercial models.
  • Provide commercial input into project cost estimates, budgets and long-range forecasts.
  • Oversee, with support from Legal, resolution of claims, disputes, variations, and performance issues with suppliers.

Contracts and Procurement

  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of agreements, including professional consultancy agreements, construction contracts, MSAs, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate with Legal to ensure consistency with internal policies, applicable laws, and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage the contract lifecycle, including amendments, change orders, renewals, performance monitoring, and issue resolution.
  • Lead end‑to‑end procurement processes, including sourcing strategies, RFP/RFQ development, bid evaluations, supplier selection, and award recommendations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to optimize cost, quality, delivery timelines, and supplier performance.
  • Drive competitive, transparent, and ethical tendering practices.
  • Establish procurement plans and schedules aligned with project and operational requirements.
  • Collaborate with Finance to ensure procurement decisions align with budgets, Delegation of Authority, and financial controls.
  • Build and maintain supplier relationships, including KPIs, performance reviews, issue tracking, negotiated discounts, compliance, and supplier risk mitigation.
  • Partner with Operations, Regulatory, Finance, Legal, Indigenous Relations, and Executive Leadership to support project delivery and business objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Supply Chain, Finance, or Commerce
  • Seven to ten years in a procurement role working on major construction or mining projects
  • Experience supporting or leading commercial negotiations with Indigenous communities
  • Knowledge of Canadian construction industry and/or mining
  • Knowledge and experience with SAP procurement, materials management modules
  • Strong Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills.
  • Relationship-builder with excellent interpersonal skills to work with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to make sound decisions and formalize written recommendations.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Good analytical skills and problem solving
  • Strong leadership, management, communication and coaching skills
  • Commercial acumen

LOCATION

This is a full-time role based in our office in downtownCalgary, Alberta. This position is expected to work primarily in-office, with periodic travel to the Grassy Mountain project site in Crowsnest Pass as required.
