Our articling positions support the fulfillment of the Experiential training competencies for candidates, established by the Law Society of Ontario.

BRANCH OVERVIEW:

Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) – formerly known as the Office of the Independent Police Review Director (OIPRD) – is responsible for receiving, managing and overseeing public complaints about misconduct of police officers. LECA accepts complaints about the conduct of the following:

  • All municipal, regional, and provincial (OPP) police officers;

  • Special Constables employed by the Niagara Parks Commission;

  • Peace Officers in the Legislative Protective Service; and

  • First Nations police officers if the police service opts into the CSPA.

As a civilian arm's-length agency of the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, our decisions are independent from the Ontario government, the police, and the community.

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

LECA seeks one (1) articling student, whose duties will primarily consist of providing support to LECA counsel. The articling student will assist counsel in all aspects of work, including legal research, opinions and briefing notes, affidavits, notices of application and motions. Students may also have the opportunity to attend PSA/CSPA hearings, tribunal hearings, and/or appeals. Duties will also include some administrative support tasks.

You are required to be a candidate who is entering or currently registered in the Law Society of Ontario's Lawyer Licensing Process Articling Program.

###Essential Skills

Applicants should possess the following skills:

  • strong legal research, writing and editing skills;
  • strong communication skills;
  • strong organizational skills;
  • the ability to work independently and as part of a team;
  • computer proficiency.
